The guitarist took up the blues at the age of 58 after separating from his fifth wife.
Although he claimed to be 93 years old, Ford reportedly stated that he wasn't entirely sure what year he was born and may have actually been 89.
Ford began playing blues at private parties in the Greenville area, with friend Roger Stolle telling The AP: "He'd play late, then he'd spray himself with a bunch of mosquito spray and sleep in his van."
He recorded a total of seven albums, and was known for his love of whiskey during live shows.
"His music would take you right back to the heart and soul of the Delta, back in the day," said Bill Luckett, co-owner of Greenville's Ground Zero Blues Club. He described Ford as "a master of old school blues".
T-Model Ford - real name James Lewis Carter Ford - was married six times, and reportedly fathered 26 children.
