Since I?ve been doing a lot of crochet and knitting lately for charity, I?ve started looking for inexpensive sources for yarn. One place that I?ve found yarn and other crafting supplies cheap was at my local Salvation Army Thrift stores. Since seeing the yarn there so cheaply, I?ve been keeping my eyes open at all the thrift stores I frequent, as well as garage sales. Another good source is to ask for the items on Freecycle. A few years ago, I got a huge trash bag full of fabric. Some of it I couldn?t use, but there were several pieces large enough to make dresses or skirts from. Last, but not least, ask around at church, a lot of times people have yarn or craft supplies they aren?t using that they would be more than happy to get rid of. I just let the ladies at church know about my charity crochet and knitting and have had several of them give me yarn to work with. I?d also place an want ad on Craig?s list. So often people have left overs from projects or have inherited yarn that they don?t know what to do with and would be more than willing and happy to get it out of their house. It never hurts to ask and it certainly doesn?t cost anything to ask!

Dos Santos (15-1) landed his deciding blow after Mir, 33, tried a left kick, but left himself open to a wicked right hand that Dos Santos landed on Mir's chin, sending the 11-year UFC veteran to the canvas.

"I let my hands go," Dos Santos, 28, said.

After Mir was downed, Dos Santos delivered a combination of punches. Mir tried to stand, but Dos Santos smacked him with another hard right, and referee Herb Dean stopped the fight at the 3-minute 4-second mark.

"He hit me hard," said Mir (16-6).

A submission specialist, Mir tried and failed to hold onto Dos Santos' right leg in the first round, and never again could seriously threaten to get the fight to the ground.

Mir was left staggered in the final seconds of the first round after effectively resigning the round with Dos Santos winning with faster hands setting up a hard right to Mir's temple.

"I couldn't take them," Mir said of Dos Santos' strikes. "Very dangerous guy."

Before the knockout in the second, Dos Santos hit Mir with a right that caused the challenger to tumble. Mir later apparently was poked in the eye before being belted down again.

Earlier, Cain Velasquez pronounced his full recovery from the disastrous surrender of his UFC heavyweight belt to Dos Santos in November.

The San Jose fighter dominated bigger heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, turning the bout into a bloodbath and scoring a first-round technical knockout in 3:36.

Velasquez (10-1) gave up his belt by suffering a first-round knockout 64 seconds into the massively watched UFC debut card on Fox.

Against Silva (16-4), Velasquez quickly grabbed Silva's leg to score a takedown, then started delivering short elbows to the face, opening a nasty cut on the bridge of Silva's nose that required medical attention.

When fighting resumed, Velasquez unloaded a series of hard lefts to Silva's face that set up the stoppage.

Fitness instructor spins 24 hours for cancer society

Consie Severson takes on her fourth 24-hour Ride for Research today.

?Every year that I have done this has been special for me, but this year will be more special since I lost my sister to cancer in March,? said Severson, a four-year cancer survivor herself.

?It will be a tough one, but I?ll pull through because it means so much to me that no on else has to go through what I did and what so many people do. There?ll be no stopping me.?

Severson starts the ride on a stationary bike at Ladies World at 8:30 a.m. today and ends at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. There will be a barbecue, refreshments, kids? activities, entertainment, a raffle, and a pancake breakfast. People are welcome to join her for however long they like on the two stationary bikes that will be set up beside her.

?Some friends will be with me through the night and I?ve had lots of help so I?m well looked after and all I have to do is pedal. It?s all worth it,? she said.

People can make donations to Ride for Research, which benefits the local Canadian Cancer Society, at the event or to Severson?s personal page online at cancer.ca.

GAIL of India Inks Gas Deal with Turkmenistan

GAIL of India said it has signed a Gas Sales & Purchase Agreement (GSPA) for purchase of gas from Turkmenistan to be transported through the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan- India (TAPI) Pipeline.

The GSPA was signed by Mr. B. C. Tripathi, CMD, GAIL and Mr. Sakhatmurad Mamedov, Chairman, National Gas Company, TurkmenGas in the presence of Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, India.

The gas source for the pipeline would be Galkynysh (formerly Osman-Yolotan) in Turkmenistan which is estimated to have gas reserves of 13-21 TCM (Best estimates of 16 TCM).

The 1680 km, 56 inch diameter pipeline will orginate at South Yolotan-Osman in Turkmenistan and will traverse 145 km in Turkmenistan, 735 km in Afghanistan and 800 km in Pakistan before entering India at Fazilka in Punjab.

Turkmenist?n would be exporting 90 MMSCMD through this pipeline of which 14 MSCMD would be taken by Afghanistan and 38 MMSCMD each by India and Pakistan.

The pipeline will be built at an estimated investment of US$ 7.6 billion approx.

Love?s little moments are the inspiration for?Kouply. This free app for?iPhone,?Windows Phone?and the web?turns your relationship into a game ? letting you and your significant other?award points to each other as positive reinforcement?for those seriously sweet gestures.

Did she take you on a wonderful trip? 50 points. Did he cook you a great meal? That?ll be 25 points for him.

Everything can be kept totally private if that?s your preference, but you can also compete against other couples if you?d like. Yes, there?s a leaderboard.

In addition, you can share (with friends on Kouply or on Facebook) the quantifiable evidence of your partner?s appreciation for that wonderful thing you just did.?A recent update to the app allows couples to post accompanying photos, as well.

Kouply is a moonlight project from two Seattle-area software engineers and a designer ? three guys looking to make at least a tiny dent in the divorce rate by encouraging behavior that has a positive effect on relationships.

Some app developers are seeking millions of users, others are angling for a big exit. This team wants to hear someone say that its app kept their marriage intact.

?That would be our measure of success,? said engineer?Tushar Chaudhary,?who founded the project along with designer?Vineet Gupta and engineer?Vinit Jain.

Chaudhary and?Jain have day jobs at Microsoft, which has encouraged its employees to develop Windows Phone apps on their own time.?Gupta worked previously at the Redmond company. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

Kouply was inspired by the wife of one of?Chaudhary?s friends, who pointed out the potential impact of tracking ?brownie points? in a relationship. Her husband wasn?t a fan of the concept, but Chaudhary saw the potential and worked with?Jain and his wife to further develop the idea. Gupta joined as an experienced designer.

The founders acknowledge that some people might object to the notion of applying game mechanics to the institution of marriage ? supporting a sacred bond using the same psychology that motivates someone to spend hours slingshotting little birds at nefarious pigs.

But the Kouply founders believe their approach can help to address a serious problem.?Someday they even hope to see marriage counselors prescribe Kouply.

Kouply isn?t the only app pursuing this strategy of gamifying relationships. Another example is?PairSpark, a Seattle startup with apps for iPhone and Android.

Kouply is notable in part for its underlying privacy settings and sharing features. Couples are treated as individuals in relation to one another inside the app, with separate scores of their own, but they?re seen as single entity when viewed by their friends in Kouply or Facebook.

Through privacy settings, both members of a couple must agree to share a particular piece of information before it?s made public.

Couples can search and choose from a long list of preset acknowledgments with established points ? such as, ?bought me a present,? or ?went out on a date night,? among many others.?They can also give a custom acknowledgment, but those are set by default at 5 points to keep couples from gaming the system.

But will it really be natural for people to pull out their phones to give their significant others points for making them feel good? That?s where the Kouply founders say the psychology of games kicks in, as couples strive for higher scores together and individually.

Recognition breeds recognition, they say. It also breeds other things, but that?s another app entirely.

For years, raw food enthusiasts have touted the health benefits of uncooked food for humans. Now, some veterinarians and pet owners believe that a raw meat diet is best for pets.

Sharon Misik, an actress who adopted two Siberian huskies in 2008 from a pet rescue organization, is a believer. After adopting the animals, Ms. Misik and her husband, who live in Bradbury, Calif., spent thousands of dollars on specialized diets and trips to veterinarians to treat a mysterious illness that plagued their dogs, which had trouble eating and severe diarrhea and seemed perpetually sick.

When nothing else worked, she decided to try a raw food diet, even though several veterinarians discouraged it, saying it would expose her dogs to harmful bacteria. A holistic veterinarian encouraged her to start her dogs on a line of raw and freeze-dried chicken and beef foods made by Stella and Chewy?s, a Wisconsin-based pet food company.

The difference was immediate, Ms. Misik says.

?They were like new dogs,? she said. ?They were happy and healthy, and their digestive systems improved dramatically. Since we started them on the raw food, these dogs have not been sick one day.?

Ms. Misik is among a vocal minority of pet owners willing to pay a premium for raw pet foods. Last year, sales of commercially prepared raw pet foods reached $100 million, although that number doesn?t reflect the unknown numbers of pet owners preparing their own raw food diets at home.

While sales of raw pet foods are robust, they represent only a fraction of the $19 billion pet food market in the United States. Even so, raw products are now one of the fastest-growing segments of the pet food industry, and sales of raw pet foods have climbed 15 percent annually for the past three years and are projected to keep up the fast-paced growth, said David Lummis, the senior pet-industry analyst for Packaged Facts, a market research company.

Some pet owners have turned to raw products because of a growing number of recalls of processed pet foods, including a spate of pet food recalls in 2007 linked to ingredient suppliers in China that are believed to have resulted in the death or serious illness of hundreds of pets. More recently, in May, 14 people in nine states contracted salmonella after handling tainted dog food from a South Carolina plant that only six years before produced contaminated food that killed dozens of dogs.

But makers of raw pet foods say their products allow cats and dogs to eat a more natural diet, similar to the way animals in the wild hunt prey and eat it raw. Cooking pet foods, they claim, kills a wide assortment of vitamins and enzymes. And pet digestive systems, advocates say, did not evolve to handle the corn, grains, flour and other fillers often added to highly processed pet foods.

?We have people that call or e-mail us daily with stories about how this diet has changed their pet?s life,? said Marie Moody, the founder and president of Stella and Chewy?s. ?Pets that used to have allergies or other issues, pets that wouldn?t eat, pets that were overweight ? it really has impacted both the longevity and the quality of life for people?s pets.?

Ms. Moody became a believer in raw diets after one of her adopted dogs, Chewy, developed a viral infection and she nursed him back to health with organic meats and vegetables. Started in 2004, the company now has raw meat products in more than 3,000 stores nationwide, including freeze-dried dinners and treats. Reed Howlett, the chief executive of Nature?s Variety, another maker of a popular line of raw pet foods, said his company has products in about 6,000 stores in the United States and Canada ? up from 5,000 stores in 2011 ? including the large Petco chain.

But in the veterinary world, there is resistance. Many vets worry that raw meat may be even more likely than processed foods to expose cats and dogs ? and their owners ? to pathogens. They stress that owners who choose to go raw may end up depriving their pets of proper nutrition. And they argue that there is little scientific evidence that raw is necessarily better.

?Animals in nature eat raw food but don?t live very long,? said Louise Murray, vice president of the A.S.P.C.A.?s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City and the author of ?Vet Confidential: An Insider?s Guide to Protecting Your Pet?s Health.? ?They tend to have parasites and succumb to infections and things like that. What is natural isn?t necessarily safe or better.?

What?s more, many people are under the mistaken belief that a raw diet means plopping uncooked chicken breasts in a bowl for their dog or cat, said Dr. Tony Buffington, a professor of veterinary clinical sciences at the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center. In reality, cats and dogs in the wild get their nutrients by eating the entire animal.

?What people confuse is that ?carnivore? really means animal eater, not muscle-meat eater,? said Dr. Buffington. ?In nature, they?re eating all the guts and the bones and the rest of the animal, all of which supplies their nutrient needs. That?s confused more commonly than one might imagine.?

Dr. Buffington said that while he does not necessarily discourage raw diets, pet owners should look for products ? raw or otherwise ? that meet the standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials, or A.A.F.C.O., which establishes nutritional requirements for complete and balanced pet foods. They should also be wary of the costs of raw products, Dr. Buffington said, which on a per-calorie basis he estimates can cost ?about 10 times as much as what you can get at a supermarket.?

Both the A.S.P.C.A. and the American Veterinary Medical Association caution people against feeding their pets raw diets, citing the risk of salmonella and E. coli contamination. One study in 2008 found that when 166 frozen raw food products sold in Canadian stores were randomly tested, about 20 percent were positive for salmonella.

Nature?s Variety and Stella and Chewy?s say they take the necessary precautions to prevent contamination of their brands. Both companies subject their raw meat products to a system known as high pressure processing that has been shown to eliminate harmful pathogens.

Ms. Moody says her firm grinds organs, bones and small amounts of organic fruits and vegetables into their raw products and takes the additional step of sending batches of food to independent labs for testing. Customers who buy the company?s products can find the batch number on the back of the package, go to the company?s Web site and then type it in to see the test results for that particular batch.

?The quality of our food far exceeds what A.A.F.C.O. requires,? she said.

For her part, Ms. Misik, the actress in California, said she easily spends about $250 a month on raw products for her two huskies, which is far more than she was previously spending on traditional pet foods like kibble. To save money, she buys in bulk and looks for special deals at her local stores.

?There?s no way around it: It?s not cheap,? she said. ?But I saw what kibble did to these guys. As long as I can afford to do this, I will.?
