China charges disgraced politician Bo Xilai with corruption

Beijing: Fallen political star Bo Xilai has been formally charged with bribery, corruption and abuse of power, more than a year after he was stood down as Chongqing's party chief over the scandal stemming from the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.

Official news agency Xinhua said prosecutors in the eastern city of Jinan in Shandong province had indicted Mr Bo on Thursday, confirming mounting speculation that his trial was drawing near.

Mr Bo's upcoming trial is widely expected to be no more than a show trial?

That speculation arose from an internal document circulating in Chongqing, which outlined charges of Mr Bo receiving millions of yuan of bribes via his wife, Gu Kailai.

The trial will take place in Jinan's Intermediate People's Court. A date has yet to be set, but numerous reports indicate it will be held within the next month, and as soon as next week.

"The trial will be open anytime within the next two months," Li Xiaolin, a lawyer with close ties to Gu Kailai, told Fairfax Media.

Mr Bo was removed in March last year from his senior post as party chief of Chongqing, a municipality of 30 million in southwest China. He was later expelled from the Communist Party and its elite 25-member Politburo.

The government in September last year accused Mr Bo of corruption and of bending the law to hush up the murder.

Mr Bo's wife Gu Kailai was given a suspended death sentence for murdering Mr Heywood, a long-time associate of the Bo family.

The case came to light when Mr Bo's former police chief Wang Lijun dramatically fled to the US consulate in Chengdu.

Like those of his wife, Mr Bo's upcoming trial is widely expected to be no more than a show trial, in which a verdict has already been painstakingly negotiated by Communist Party leaders.

He is expected to receive at least between 15 to 20 years jail, and possibly a suspended death sentence.

Mr Bo is the first Politburo member to be tried on criminal charges since 2008, when former Shanghai party boss Chen Liangyu was sentenced to 18 years jail for corruption.

Coyote drags 2-year-old girl at southern California cemetery

CYPRESS ? A 2-year-old girl is recovering after she was bitten and dragged by a coyote at a Southern California cemetery.

The Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/1baABM7 ) reports Klarissa Barrera, of Long Beach, was given a rabies shot and treated for a 2 1/2-inch gash on her calf.

She was attacked 10 feet from her mother Thursday as the family visited a relative's grave at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress.

Michelle Luper says the coyote bit her daughter on the back and dragged her toward some bushes. Luper says she screamed and lunged, and the coyote let go.

State wildfire officials later shot and killed three coyotes at the cemetery.

Experts say coyote attacks on people are rare and this was the first reported in Orange County this year.

OKI C831n

Relatively few color laser printers can print at up to tabloid size (11 by 17) size, and even fewer of those are moderately priced. The OKI C831n is a welcome addition to the group, providing good speed and low running costs at a price that won't break the bank.

As an LED-based printer, the C831n uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in place of lasers as a light source, though LED printers are still considered laser class. The C831n, off-white with gray trim, measures 14.2 by 17.6 by 21.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 82 pounds, large enough for it to need a separate table. Its front panel includes qa mono LED screen, a 4-way controller, and an alphanumeric keypad.

The C831n's standard paper capacity is 400 sheets, split between a 300-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. It supports two optional 530-sheet trays ($379 list), for a maximum paper capacity of 1,560 sheets. It has a duty cycle of up to 75,000 pages per month. The C831n lacks an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper; one is available as a $299 option, or (better), the OKI C831dn ($1929 list) is the same printer as the C831n but with the duplexer added.

The printer offers USB, parallel, and Ethernet connectivity; I tested it on an Ethernet network with its drivers loaded on a PC running Windows Vista.

OKI C831n

Print Speed and Output Quality
I timed the OKI C831nn on the latest version of our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 7.7 pages per minute (ppm). That's in line with its rated print speed of up to 35 ppm for both monochrome and color printing, about what we'd see if it were printing solely text pages. (Our test suite consists of text pages, graphics pages, and pages of mixed content.) It's essentially tied with the 7.6 ppm turned in by the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 7100/N, rated at 30 ppm for monochrome and color printing. I timed the Dell 7130cdn Color Printer at 8.1 ppm, while the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 7500/N tested at 7.1 ppm.

Text quality was average for a laser-class printer, good for typical business uses except ones requiring very small fonts.

Graphics quality was average for a color laser, suitable for general business use including PowerPoint handouts, though I might hesitate to hand them to clients I was trying to impress. Dithering (graininess) was a common issue. The printer had trouble printing very thin lines in two figures. One illustration showed misregistration (a misalignment between different elements of the design).

Photo quality was a bit below par for a color laser-class printer. A monochrome print showed a tint. Dithering (graininess) was common, and there was some loss of detail in both bright and dark areas. The C711n can print out recognizable photos from files or Web pages, but I'd hesitate to use it to print out company newsletters and the like.

Running costs are a strong point with the C831n. The cost per page is 1.8 cents per monochrome page and 7.9 cents per color page; the color figure is particularly good.

If you need a laser-class printer for printing out color at up to tabloid size, the OKI Data C831n should be on your short list. It has good speed, a low sticker price, and low running cost, especially for color printing. Its color output quality isn't up to that of the similarly low-priced Editors' Xerox Phaser 7100/N, but it should be enough for many businesses. Its output quality isn't in the same league as the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 7500/N, but then again, neither is its price. As a low-cost tabloid laser-class printer with low color costs, the OKI C831n has much to recommend it.

DETROIT Wayne State University researchers announced today a $25,000 planning grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a strategic plan for a field-based water research center.

Known as HEART the Huron to Erie Alliance for Research and Training the center will focus on the development of field facilities at Lake St. Clair Metropark and Belle Isle along the Huron-to-Erie corridor, a binational body of water shared by the United States and Canada connecting the upper and lower Great Lakes. The project is a collaborative effort between Wayne State, Macomb Community College, the Huron-Clinton Metropark Authority and Macomb County.

The goal of HEART is to design activities and facilities to attract scientists, educators and students from national and international institutions to conduct innovative research focusing on urban systems and the environment. HEART's training and research activites will impact more than 4 million people along the waterway, who will receive recreational, economical and ecological benefits from the project. In addition, HEART will inform watershed managers and policymakers from a variety of urban freshwater environments.

The project, led by Carol Miller, Ph.D., P.E., professor of civil and environmental engineering in WSU's College of Engineering, and the Wayne State University Urban Watershed Environmental Research Group (UWERG) including Donna Kashian, assistant professor of biological sciences in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences; David Pitts, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmaceutical science in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences; and Jeffrey Ram, Ph.D., professor of physiology in the School of Medicine aims to develop the center's research themes, identify research partners and expand recruitment networks for attracting students and post-docs to the facility, obtain expert input on field station organization and administration, and develop a strategic plan for fund raising.

"With the help of this grant from the National Science Foundation, we will be able to plan out the next steps for improving the field facilities of HEART," said Miller. "The two sites will provide much-needed space to deploy a wide array of educational offerings that make use of water-related field efforts, and will also allow us to expand these opportunities for students from Macomb Community College, Wayne State University and many others throughout the Great Lakes region and beyond."

As the HEART facilities expand, a variety of activities including workshops, seminars, water research and educational opportunities tailored to the needs of various stakeholders will take place.

"We are pleased to be the recipient of this planning grant from NSF," said Hilary Ratner, vice president for research at Wayne State. "The primary field stations located at Lake St. Clair Metropark will support current and future collaborative research programs, as well as provide educational opportunities to students at Wayne State, Macomb Community College and many others."

With no safety oversight, Six Flags will investigate coaster death itself

Witnesses say the woman who was killed after being thrown from a roller coaster in Texas was concerned that her lap restraint didn't work. NBC's Charles Hadlock reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

The investigation of the death of a woman on a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas will be led by Six Flags itself, because there's no state or federal agency responsible for enforcing the safety of amusement parks.

Rosy Esparza of Dallas died Friday night when she fell from the Texas Giant, which is billed as the world's steepest wooden roller coaster.

Six Flags initially said in a statement that it was "working with authorities" to figure out what happened. But it later had to admit that it was running the investigation itself because there are no authorities to work with.

No federal agency has legal authority to enforce safety standards. And Texas is one of at least 17 states that have no agency responsible for inspecting amusement park rides, according to NBC News' survey of state codes in all 50 states.

While he was previously in the House, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., introduced legislation every congressional session to establish federal regulation of amusement park rides beginning in 1999. But the measure never passed.

Markey renewed his call Sunday for federal regulation of "roller coasters that hurdle riders at extreme speeds along precipitous drops."

"A baby stroller is subject to tougher federal regulation than a roller coaster carrying a child in excess of 100 miles per hour," Markey said in a statement. "This is a mistake."

The Texas Giant, a 14-story-high, 4,900-feet-long roller coaster that is among the premier attractions at the park in Arlington, Texas, remains closed until Six Flags concludes its investigation, a park spokeswoman said. The park gave no timetable for reporting any information.

Nadine Kelley, who had been waiting in line for the ride Friday night, told NBC 5 of Dallas that riders who were sitting behind the woman said that "right when they came down off the first bump and hit that first turn, she flew out."

The woman was accompanied by two children, who were "hysterical," Kelley said. "They were saying that their mother flew out of the car."

"It was sad. It was very sad," she said. "We kept telling them to let them out because they were hysterical. The daughter and the son said, 'We have to go get my mom. We have to go get my mom.' We were kind of in disbelief, and we just said a prayer for her."

Alfred Cannon, Esparza's next-door neighbor, said Esparza was "an incredible mother to those kids."

NBCDFW: Neighbors recall woman who died on Six Flags coaster

Texas: Safety certificate 'not an endorsement' of safety
The Texas Giant is what's called a "super hybrid" ? a roller coaster with traditional wooden components that rides on steel tracks.?

"This track allows us to do much more with a wooden structure: steeper drops, steeper banks," Fred Grubb, president of Rocky Mountain Construction of Hayden, Idaho, said after his company rebuilt the ride two years ago.

The rebuilding deepened the ride's first drop to 79 degrees and banked several of its turns beyond 95 degrees, with one reaching 115 degrees, Grubb told Funworld, the magazine of the International Association for Amusement Parks and Attractions.

An independent inspection of the new ride would have been conducted by the Texas Insurance Department. But the department won't be part of the death investigation because the park's insurance isn't in question.

That's the case even though the Amusement Safety Organization, based in Montecito, Calif., had previously recorded four "significant injuries" on the ride this year, after having recorded seven last year. Nearly all were for whiplash-like neck injuries, it said.

Meanwhile, federal oversight and statistics on amusement park safety are almost nonexistent.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Safety Council both cite amusement park safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials, but those standards are voluntary.

In Texas, the Insurance Department is responsible for setting regulations for amusement park rides. It requires an annual safety inspection certifying that ride meets ASTM standards. Texas law specifies that the inspection must be carried out by an inspector hired by the insurance company ? not by any government authority.

To drive home the point that Texas isn't responsible for the safety of ?any roller coaster, the Insurance Department states: "Recognition by the Department that the amusement ride has satisfied these standards is not an endorsement by the Department or a statement regarding the safe operation of the amusement ride."

"There's absolutely no federal oversight, no state investigative oversight or any local investigative oversight," Ken Martin, an independent inspector and consultant on amusement park rides from Richmond, Va., told NBC News.

"It sounds like the fox guarding the henhouse to me," Martin said.

As of December, eight states required no permits or inspections for amusement park rides, according to a survey of state codes in all 50 states by NBC News:

  • Alabama
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • South Dakota
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

In addition to Texas, six states accepted inspections from park-employed or -contracted inspectors or park insurance companies:

Florida doesn't inspect permanent facilities that employ 1,000 or?more full-time employees and maintain their own safety?inspectors.

Minnesota allows inspections by inspectors contracted by the park or by the State Agricultural Society.

While photographing near the osprey nest at Lee Metcalf NWR, one of the adult osprey flew out of the nest for a few minutes, returning with a stick for the nest:

Osprey with stick for the nest

?

As the osprey approached the nest, the young nestling raised his head to see what was going on:

Osprey with stick for the nest

?

As the adult landed, you can clearly see the stick in one of his talons. And ?Junior? checking things out ? bringing me a fish?

?

I always welcome visiting the Lee Metcalf NWR, particularly for photographing the always-active osprey. In Missouri, I only occasionally see osprey, and they are just migrating through (although reports of some beginning to nest within the state have been noted).

Police: College Station teens pocket-dialed 911 while smoking pot

Two College Station teens face drug charges after one of them accidently "pocket dialed" 911 this weekend while smoking pot at a residence, according to the College Station Police Department.

Police responded to the residence in the 200 block of Navarro about 4 p.m. Sunday after receiving the 911 call, and interviewed several people at the home.

"Officers were able to determine that there was no emergency and that one of the residents had 'pocket dialed' 911 while smoking marijuana at the residence," the press release states.

Police detected a "strong odor of burnt marijuana" coming from the home and later obtained a search warrant "based on statements made by one of the residents," according to the release.

A search of the home turned up 29 grams of cocaine, 5.3 grams of Hashish oil, 2.7 ounces of marijuana, and $4,131 in cash, police said.

David Marshal Norris, 18, of College Station, has been charged with two counts of manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance in a drug-free school zone, both first-degree felonies; and possession of marijuana in a drug-free zone, a state jail felony, police said.

Kyle Nelson Bading, 19, also of College Station, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was booked into the College Station Jail, where he was released after posting bond.

Church of Iran Members Sentenced To Long Prison Terms

ICC Note:

Eight Iranian Christians have been sentenced to prison sentences ranging from one to six years after being convicted for political charges portraying them as a national security threat and spreading propaganda against the system. The Christians are members of a Church of Iran fellowship in Shiraz in southern Iran. The group had been arrested in October 2012 and released on bail prior to the July 16 convictions.

7/18/2013 Iran (BosNewsLife) - Eight members of Iran's largest evangelical house church movement have been sentenced to years imprisonment on charges that include "?action against the national security? and ?propaganda against the order of the system,? Christian rights activists confirmed late Thursday, July 18.

Mohammad Roghangir was sentenced to six years, Massoud Rezaie to five years, Mehdi Ameruni and Bijan Farokhpour Haghighi to three years, Shahin Lahooti and Suroush Saraie to two and half years each, while Eskandar Rezaie and Roxana Forughi were both sentenced to one year in prison, said advocacy group Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW).

The group was expected to appeal their July 16 convictions.

The ruling came months after seven of them were detained October 12 last year during an evening raid by security services on a house in Shiraz where a prayer service led by Roghangir was underway, Christians said.

Massoud Rezaie was reportedly detained six days later.

SERVING SENTENCES

They were all subsequently released on bail after paying substantial amounts, but the ruling means they will have to start serving their sentences.

In a statement, the National Council of the Church of Iran denied wrongdoing. In accordance with the Gospel, the Church is apolitical. While individual Christians are entitled to hold political opinions, the Church does not," the Council said. "These charges are entirely without foundation. However, as loyal citizens we will continue to pray for our leaders and for peace and reconciliation in our nation.?

CSW?s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas told BosNewsLife that ?It is both disappointing and deplorable that the Iranian regime persists in detaining religious minorities on political charges, as has occurred once again in this case."

He said the detained Christians "in no way constitute a threat to the state."

Concussion suit vs NCAA seeks class-action status

CHICAGO (AP) ? Attorneys suing the NCAA over its handling of head injuries asked a federal judge Friday to let them expand the lawsuit nationwide to include thousands of plaintiffs in a case they contend could change college sports forever.

The motion seeking class-action status was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, where the original lawsuit was filed two years ago on behalf of several former athletes, including former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington. His attorney, Joseph Siprut, said he doesn't want to see the demise of college contact sports, including football, but safety is paramount.

"If changes aren't made, the sport is going to slowly die," he said. If they can't be reassured football is safe, parents will stop their kids from playing "and when the talent well dries up, that's how the sport dies."

The NCAA late Friday did not immediately have a comment.

Concussions have become a major issue in sports in recent years. The NFL, NHL and college football, among others, have implemented stricter rules on hits to the head and player safety. But the NFL is mired in a lawsuit involving more than 4,000 former players seeking millions of dollars for problems they blame on head injuries during their careers.

The NCAA could wind up in a similar situation.

Attached to the class-action request is a report for the plaintiffs by a leading authority on concussions, Robert Cantu, who cites an internal NCAA survey from 2010. He said the NCAA found that nearly half of the college trainers who responded indicated they put athletes showing signs of a concussion back in the same game.

"It is well settled in the scientific community that an athlete must never be returned to play on the same day after a concussion diagnosis," said Cantu, who is medical director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The plaintiffs say the NCAA was lax in establishing a clear policy about dealing with concussions, leaving key decisions to individual schools or leagues.

"That is tantamount to doing nothing or even worse," said Siprut. "It creates the misperception that they have taken adequate measures when they haven't."

Arrington contends he suffered "numerous and repeated concussions" at Eastern Illinois, which is perhaps best known as the alma mater of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and Saints coach Sean Payton. Arrington is seeking unspecified monetary damages and changes in policy including the establishment of a long-term medical monitoring program for injured athletes and new concussion guidelines for schools and coaches.

The lawsuit accuses the NCAA of failing student-athletes and "choosing instead to sacrifice them on an altar of money and profits" by neglecting to adopt stricter standards. Responding to Arrington's lawsuit in 2011, the NCAA said it found "gross misstatements" and said the governing body has been "concerned about the safety of all of its student-athletes, including those playing football, throughout its history."

The NCAA has taken recent steps to beef up awareness of how to treat possible head injuries, from legislation and outreach efforts to new rules on the playing field. Earlier Friday, the NCAA said it was awarding a $399,999 grant to fund a study into the long-term effects of head injuries in college sports.

Last fall, the NCAA said the rate of football-related concussions has remained steady over an eight-year period ? with 2.5 concussions reported for every 1,000 game-related exposures in 2011. The NCAA says there are estimates that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million concussions occur in sports and recreation-related activities every year.

The concussions lawsuit is just one of several legal headaches for the NCAA. On Thursday, six current college football players were added as plaintiffs to a high-profile antitrust lawsuit that claims the NCAA owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used without compensation. The federal judge in that case is still mulling whether to turn the lawsuit into a class action.

Swell Radio (for iPhone)

The recently released Swell Radio is unofficially billed as "Pandora for radio," and after using it for several hours, I understand why. The free iPhone?app lets users stream news, comedy, sports, and business content to their Apple iPhones?content that adapts to your listening habits to create a customized experience. Fans of news, podcasts, and talk radio should consider giving Swell Radio a download.

Tuning In
Unlike Stitcher Radio (an app that provides a similar service), Swell Radio doesn't require you to create an account?you can jump right in. Swell Radio sports a simple but elegant interface that's remarkably clutter-free. Swell Radio utilizes "audio cards," rectangular panels that contain important information such as the show/station/podcast's name, runtime, and the broadcast date. There are also two icons that let you rewind a track in 10-second intervals or fast-forward in 30-second intervals. Tapping the small information icon flips the audio card where you can find a show synopsis and a link to the show's homepage.

NPR, Comedy Central Stand Up, and BBC Documentaries are just a handful of the many stations available. The audio streamed to my Sony MDR headphones was crisp and clear; in fact, Swell Radio sounded better than many terrestrial radio stations, as there were no pops or hisses. If you dig into the settings, you can find an option to for "high-quality streaming" that's designed to improve audio (when a show offers it).

Listening In
Brining a finger to the Swell logo opens a genre listing that includes technology, business, arts, TV& film, culture, music, comedy, and other categories. Selecting music took me from the informative Freakonomics show to a program that featured several indie artists. Switching categories causes Swell Radio to play a handful of the new genre tracks, before reverting to the normal mixed-content stream. Unlike Stitcher Radio you cannot ban or favorite shows.

Note: Swell Radio doesn't let you continuously listen to one topic or genre, as some other music streaming apps do. For example, if I fired up Slacker Radio's '80s station, I'd be fed nothing but tunes from the decade of decadence. Swell Radio, on the other hand, streams a variety of topics that are constantly tweaked based on several criteria. Swell Radio also doesn't offer live radio, which is SiriusXM Radio's bread and butter. Instead, it has timely recorded programming; I listed to Grantland's Jalen Rose Report podcast just hours just a few hours after it went live.

Like Slacker Radio and many other audio streaming services, Swell Radio constantly tweaks the listening experience based on your actions?it's not a traditional podcast. The app knows what you like based on how long you listened to a particular genre, when you skipped a program, the "wisdom of the Swell community," data from your Twitter stream (if you follow lots of sports teams, Swell Radio serves up more sports content), time of day, and the time since last fired up the app. You can also share content via Facebook, Twitter, and email. Swiping up on an audio card bookmarks a track, so that you can return to it at a later time.

Radio Days
There is a sea of iPhone apps designed to stream music, but very few have a laser-beam focus on news and talk. Swell Radio is impressive, but not strictly because of the novel idea; it's an app that iPhone users should download if they dig non-music radio and podcasts. Should developer Concept.io allow users to continuously stream their genres of choice (a feature that Stitcher Radio offers), this already impressive app will be that much better.

Houston police find 8 people, possibly being held against their will

By Edgar Zuniga and Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

A call placed to Houston police Friday morning expressing concern that people were being held against their will resulted in the discovery of eight people in a house, one of whom said he had been inside the home as long as 10 years.

?

Four older men, three of them malnourished, and four females ? three adults and one minor ? were found living in the north Houston house, Kese Smith, a Houston police spokeswoman, said. The females appear to be mentally disabled, Smith said, although she said adult protective services was still investigating.

?

The men, ages 80, 74, 65, and one in his 50s, were found living in a converted garage, according to Smith. They reportedly told authorities they were lured to the residence with the promise of beer and cigarettes, then weren't allowed to leave, and had been forced to turn in veterans' checks.

?

The call to Houston police came in at 8:25 a.m. local time, but it's unclear who placed it. The three men who appeared malnourished were able to talk but were transported to Houston's LBJ Hospital. NBC affiliate KPRC reported the men were not able to walk on their own.

?

It wasn't immediately clear whether the women had been held against their will or not. Three of them are related: A grandmother, her daughter, and her granddaughter, Smith said.

?

A male who does not live at the residence has been detained for questioning, but no charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon.

Three weeks after SCOTUS decision, GOP throws in the towel on marriage fight

Buzzfeed: House Republican leaders announced in a court filing Thursday that they will not defend remaining statutes similar to the Defense of Marriage Act that ban recognition of same-sex couples? marriages.

The move comes three weeks and one day after the Supreme Court ruled in Edith Windsor?s case that the federal definition of marriage in DOMA was unconstitutional because it banned the federal government from recognizing same-sex couples? marriages.

?[T]he House has determined, in light of the Supreme Court?s opinion in Windsor, that it no longer will defend that statute,? lawyers for the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG), controlled by House Republicans, wrote about veterans? benefits statutes that similarly ban recognition of same-sex couples? marriages.

"After millions of taxpayer dollars wasted defending discrimination, it?s a historic sign of the times that the House leadership is dropping its pointless quest to maintain second-class status for lesbian and gay couples," said Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin. I wish I could agree. It?s not a ?sign of the times" that Boehner?s caucus dropped the suit, it?s that it had finally become hopeless. Republicans have not accepted equality. If there was any hope at all of forcing the VA to discriminate against same-sex spouses, you know that the House GOP would still be in that courtroom, plugging away.

A Minute With: Daryl Hannah on 'Hot Flashes,' age and activism

By Piya Sinha-Roy

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Daryl Hannah defied the ingenue stereotype early in her career to transform into a futuristic robot, a mermaid and a sword-wielding killer, and in her latest role she battles age and sexist stereotypes as a lesbian basketball player.

Hannah, 52, is part of the ensemble cast that includes Brooke Shields and Wanda Sykes in "The Hot Flashes," out in theaters and video-on-demand now and on DVD August 13.

The film follows a group of women dealing with menopause who form a basketball team to raise money for a breast cancer screening van.

Chicago-born Hannah, best known for films such as "Blade Runner," "Splash" and "Kill Bill," talked to Reuters about playing a lesbian character, battling Hollywood's perception of youth and getting arrested.

Q: What drew you to the character of Ginger?

A: People always think of me as having been an ingenue, but I pretty much through my whole career have played character roles, such as goofy Annelle in "Steel Magnolias" and a robot in "Blade Runner." I always try for roles where I can really disappear into the character. I really liked the fact that (Ginger) was a character that people wouldn't necessarily associate with me.

Q: Ginger has the added challenge of being a lesbian in a small town in Texas. How did you want to portray her?

A: I wanted to portray her as a human being who is uncomfortable with revealing who she is because of prejudice. Racism is the same thing as sexism, and people being prejudiced against homosexuality is identical. You'd think we've moved beyond that in this day and age but we're still working our way through it apparently. So I think in small towns, the experience ... is heightened even more because everybody knows everyone's business.

Q: The film follows the journey of a female basketball team trying to raise money for charity. What message does it have?

A: It's an empowering, positive message to say, just because our media and pop culture pushes youth as the only thing of value, that women of all ages have something great to offer and have value. I think that's also reality, especially in these times, when women are so disparaged and overlooked after you get to be 30. It's ridiculous.

Q: Have you faced similar problems with growing older in Hollywood?

A: I started out as a teenager when I was doing "Blade Runner," and I remember when I was 30 years old, I started hearing I was too old for roles, and I'm talking about roles where you're playing a doctor or a teacher or a mother.

I think that's just partly because the entertainment industry is still a male dominated industry, so their preconception of what is marketable and what is sexy is strangely only focused on youth. And even youth is made to look weird. I think the whole idea of sexualizing girls when they're in their pre-teens on magazines and advertisements, it's just creepy.

Q: You're known for your environmental activism in recent years, alongside your acting. Which is more important to you?

A: Acting is my creative release and also what I do professionally. My advocacy work is just my survival instinct kicking in, when I see that our species is going in a really dangerous direction and compromising our life-support system. I'm trying to educate myself and spread information so that hopefully we can all make wiser decisions.

Q: Your activism has gotten you arrested in the past. Why do you get involved in the frontlines of protests?

A: I believe that civil disobedience is an incredibly important part of shifting a paradigm ... It takes acts of civil disobedience and a peaceful protest to overcome and stand against terrible wrongs. In my case, it's not something I thought about or decided to do or planned, they occurred when I decided to stand in solidarity with the people who were suffering the effects.

The guitarist took up the blues at the age of 58 after separating from his fifth wife.

Although he claimed to be 93 years old, Ford reportedly stated that he wasn't entirely sure what year he was born and may have actually been 89.

Ford began playing blues at private parties in the Greenville area, with friend Roger Stolle telling The AP: "He'd play late, then he'd spray himself with a bunch of mosquito spray and sleep in his van."

He recorded a total of seven albums, and was known for his love of whiskey during live shows.

"His music would take you right back to the heart and soul of the Delta, back in the day," said Bill Luckett, co-owner of Greenville's Ground Zero Blues Club. He described Ford as "a master of old school blues".

T-Model Ford - real name James Lewis Carter Ford - was married six times, and reportedly fathered 26 children.

Britain: Iran can join Syria peace talks only if it changes tack

LONDON (Reuters) - British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Tuesday that Iran would have to accept proposals to bring about peace in Syria agreed at an international conference in Geneva last year before it could take part in any new peace talks.

"A good starting point would be acceptance of 'Geneva One' ... and that is something we haven't heard from Iran as yet," Hague told lawmakers. The conference agreed that Syria needed a transitional government with executive powers to attain peace, he said.

5 things to know about first half of Rivera's tour

NEW YORK (AP) ? Widely acclaimed as the greatest reliever in baseball history, Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees has been making a farewell tour in his last season before his announced retirement.

"I enjoy every bit of it," he said Monday during All-Star festivities at Citi Field.

With the 43-year-old closer set to pitch in his final All-Star game Tuesday night, a look at five gifts that opposing teams have given the career saves leader:

___

CRAAACK! Rivera has made a living shattering the bats of opposing hitters, so the Minnesota Twins paid tribute in a most proper fashion: They presented him with a rocking chair built from cracked bats and inscribed it, "Chair of Broken Dreams." No star was spared, either. Sheared wood once swung by Kirby Puckett, Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau was used. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, All-Star closer Glen Perkins and Morneau gave it to Rivera at Target Field.

___

WAVE GOODBYE: The Oakland Athletics gave Rivera a surfboard that was trimmed in A's green and gold, along with his No. 42. The team played his signature "Enter Sandman" at the presentation, and also handed him a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc from Groth Vineyards that had his number and a specially-engraved design.

___

FIRST ... AND LAST: The crosstown Mets joined New York's fire department in honoring Rivera's last regular-season home games against them. Mets CEO Fred Wilpon gave Rivera a mounted fire hose nozzle, and New York City Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano provided a mounted call box. The team then let Rivera throw out a ceremonial first ball to Mets saves leader John Franco. A damper for Rivera, though: He threw the last pitch of the game, giving up an RBI single in the ninth inning that gave the Mets a 2-1 win.

___

MO-TOWN: When the Yankees visited Detroit, manager Jim Leyland presented Rivera with a plaque showing him pitching at old Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park. The plaque came with a neat touch, too ? encased in it were two glass bottles containing dirt from the pitcher's mound at both ballparks. Leyland is managing the AL team at the All-Star game, and has assured everyone that Rivera will pitch at some point.

___

HE'S A MONEY PITCHER: Several teams have given donations to the Mariano Rivera Foundation, with former Seattle star Edgar Martinez offering a check from the Mariners Care Foundation when the Yankees came to Safeco Field. In Kansas City, Hall of Famer George Brett and Royals general manager Dayton Moore gave Rivera a donation to the church where his wife, Clara, is the pastor.
