India's new president: focus is on prosperity, not terrorism

Pranab Mukherjee's acceptance speech highlights how India sees its?sharpest threat as slower-than-expected economic growth, not Pakistan and its Islamic militant proxies.

India?s new president, Pranab Mukherjee, took the oath of office and described his nation as so focused on achieving prosperity that it would not be distracted by ?noxious practitioners of terror? and, by unstated extension, the long-running rivalry with Pakistan.

He described terrorism as a ?fourth world war? that followed the cold war, and said that India faced it long before many other nations understood its scope. Yet, President Mukherjee also appeared to be declaring victory and nudging India off a war footing, laying out peaceful prosperity as the challenge ahead and describing terrorism as a ?trap? for those who overreact.?

?Peace is the first ingredient of prosperity,? Mukherjee said in a speech before Parliament after ascending to the mostly ceremonial post. ?I am proud of the valor and conviction and steely determination of our armed forces as they have fought this [terrorism] menace on our borders; of our brave police forces as they have met the enemy within; and of our people, who have defeated the terrorist trap by remaining calm in the face of extraordinary provocation."

He added: "India is content with itself, and driven by the will to sit on the high table of prosperity. It will not be deflected in its mission by noxious practitioners of terror."?

The speech fits well with how India interprets its current place in the world: The longtime rivalry with Pakistan has essentially been won, with India pulling ahead in terms of economic development and global stature. And, in this view, the sharpest threat comes from the slower-than-expected economic growth of late, not Pakistan and its Islamic militant proxies.

With Pakistan slipping into pariah status internationally and making little economic headway, the country has by most objective measures been left behind by India. But whether Pakistan?s insecure military establishment will quietly accept that position and stay in peaceful dialogue with New Delhi remains an open question.

Mukherjee?s reference to ?extraordinary provocation? no doubt includes the 2008 Mumbai massacre, which India blames on Pakistan, with growing evidence to back it up. The Indian public has stoically avoided pressing political leaders to exact revenge, allowing New Delhi the chance to portray itself as the responsible player in South Asia by resuming peace talks and to further isolate Pakistan with intelligence dossiers on the attacks.

However, Pakistan still has cards to play in Afghanistan and Kashmir. As the US troop presence in Afghanistan draws down, Pakistani support for the Taliban could draw India into military support for the Afghan government. And while Pakistan has largely desisted in recent years from encouraging Islamic militants to infiltrate Indian-controlled Kashmir, that policy could change ? especially given festering Kashmiri frustration over the lack of any political settlement there.

Where's the accountability?

It?s in India?s handling of domestic uprisings in places like Kashmir where Mukherjee?s comments become far more patriotic than truthful.

?Violence is external to our nature; when, as human beings, we do err, we exorcise our sins with penitence and accountability,? he said.

Olympics fans find ways to circumvent NBC's online control

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It took Jason Legate, a Walnut Creek, California-resident, all of 10 minutes to connect his computer to a London-based server and access BBC's coverage of the Olympics Saturday, thereby circumventing NBC's lock on coverage in the United States.

The 31-year-old system administrator said he has watched at least 12 hours of live BBC coverage (his favorite sport so far - judo) since he set up a virtual private network (VPN) connection to send all his Internet traffic to a server in London.

Legate is one of many viewers who, turned off by NBC's ironclad control of access to Olympics coverage in the United States and spotty online streaming, has resorted to a workaround--sometimes legal, sometimes not--to watch the Games when and how they want on feeds from countries such as the UK and Canada.

NBC, which spent $1.18 billion for the rights to broadcast the Olympics on the Internet and on television in the United States, has made it impossible for people without a pricey cable or satellite subscription to watch the Olympics live in the United States. Viewers can receive a complimentary four hours of live content with a temporary pass.

Only those customers who are first "authenticated" as paying cable or satellite subscribers have access to live streaming of every Olympic event, a move that has led to a explosion of anger at the network on Twitter under the unofficial "#NBCfail" hashtag.

Other complaints included NBC streaming that didn't work and the network bombarded viewers had too much advertising.

For its regular network coverage, NBC, which is owned by cable giant Comcast Corp, has tape-delayed some of the most popular sports for the U.S. prime-time audience, meaning they air nearly five to six hours after they have happened.

This helps NBC maximize its return-on-investment by saving the top events for the largest audience and thereby the biggest advertising pay-off. But it has also led to event spoilers and criticism that the network was putting the interests of its business over those of its viewers.

The tape delay and some glitches in the coverage fueled wider criticism of NBC. But NBC spokesman Chris McCloskey, who declined to comment on the matter, pointed to the 7 million live streams, which was a record on the first day of competition. The company is making every event available live online -- except the opening and closing ceremonies.

Enter a small but vocal group of tech savvy Olympics fans who are finding new ways to watch the world's biggest sports event away from their TV sets.

These fans use techniques that make it seem like their computers are located outside the United States, giving them access to streaming access to the Games held by companies other than NBC in countries such as Canada or the UK. Think of it as a sporting version of how Internet users in China access banned websites by routing traffic through servers in Hong Kong in order to fool government censors.

"Because all of my Internet traffic looks like it's coming from that box in England, the BBC thinks I'm located in England," Legate said of the workaround he utilizes.

Like NBC in the United States, the BBC's Olympic rights only allow it to show the games to users in the UK. For example, when from the United States to watch a BBC or CTV stream for example they are greeted with various messages telling them that they don't have access.

Legate still pays for cable service through his local provider Astound, but said he decided to boycott NBC after he was unable to find a live broadcast of the opening ceremonies last Friday. He was also miffed by comments made by an NBC spokesman to the LA Times on Friday about the opening ceremony not translating well online because it is "complex" and requires context for a U.S. audience.

"To me, it just felt like they were insulting everyone so I basically decided to boycott NBC for the duration of the games, which meant I had to find an alternative," he said.

Legate said he has set up the same connection for a friend who wanted to watch dressage, an equestrian event that she could not find on NBC.

People who are finding ways to circumvent NBC's restrictions seem to be spreading the word to friends, like New York City journalist Kate Gardiner, who sent out a public service announcement message on Twitter last weekend to urge her followers to use a service called TunnelBear.

The 26-year-old has been using the service to keep up with live swimming broadcasts even though she does not own a television.

TunnelBear is a VPN service that sends a user's Internet connection to different countries, so in Gardiner's case it appears her computer is based in London. The decision to avoid NBC was easy for her since she's one of the millions of U.S. residents without a cable subscription.

"I'm not going to buy a cable subscription to spend three weeks watching Olympics coverage. It's not going to happen," she said.

So far it is unclear whether NBC would take on the task of blocking or suing services like TunnelBear or StreamVia, a similar workaround. Typically, NBC has left it to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)to police the piracy of the games' TV rights.

NBC Sports spokesman McCloskey said the company never comments on issues involving security.

The workarounds--as well as the outrage--so far seem to be having no effect on TV rating for the Olympics. NBC has pointed to record-breaking success through the first three days of the games, with more than 36 million average viewers, including more than 40 million people watching the opening ceremony.

But while these fledgling services may seem popular on Twitter and blogs, many people could be turned off by them because they involve several steps that may be too advanced for a casual Internet user and can cost money, said City University of New York journalism professor Jeff Jarvis, who has tested them out. After 500 megabytes of streaming video, users need pay for a $5 subscription on TunnelBear, for example.

"While TunnelBear is easier than some services, you've got to geek out and you've got pay," Jarvis said, adding that the number of people using these services is a fraction of those tuning into NBC.

Jarvis said people circumventing NBC don't pose a threat and they are just consumers trying to make a point.

"It says 'Hey, we can go around you,' and the lesson there is, if you think you can control communication, content and culture around borders, it is going to become increasingly difficult," he said.

There's No Crying in After-Hours Business Networking! | By All ...

Networking is like walking into an arcade ? are you feeling lucky?

If it takes borrowing liberally from a famous Tom Hanks line in the movie A League of Their Own to lure you in, then I?m guilty as quoted. At least I?m not referencing the ?good advice? Jimmy Dugan wrote on some kid?s baseball (scroll way down, y?all) during another memorable scene?

On the surface, networking ?happy hours? seem like fun, sociable events, which they can be. But don?t ever think that you?re not working (to get yourself closer to a new client/customer, strategic partner, or referral) while out and about.

Do you attend evening business networking events as part of your marketing/promotional strategy? Then it?s good to have a plan, so you can use your time well and measure your networking success in concrete ways. Here?s your ultimate before, during, and after-networking strategic plan ? questionable appetizers, loud bar scenes, and ?under the influence? attendees not included:

Before You Walk Out That Door:

  • If you?re unsure of the awaiting food options, eat a snack or light meal.
  • Check the event?s RSVP list (if available) to identify people whom you?d like to meet.
  • Ensure you bring at least 15-20 business cards, a pen that works, and a cleverly concealed notepad.
  • If you have your own custom name badge, put it on before getting into your car.
  • Ensure your smart, reasonably intelligent, or plain old cell phone is fully charged and with you?
  • Check your breath; if possible, brush your teeth. Also, it wouldn?t hurt to look in the mirror and tidy yourself!
  • In the car, practice your 30-45-60 second ?pitch? a few times. Feel yourself smiling while you do this.
  • If possible, plan to arrive at your destination either a few minutes early or on time.

?

While You?re Working It (for new connections and possible referrals):

  • Ask the event?s organizer if they know any of the people from the RSVP list that you don?t yet know; if ?yes,? ask for an introduction.
  • Say hello to the people you already know and deepen those relationships.
  • If you see a lonesome soul hanging out, introduce yourself and start a meaningful conversation!
  • Don?t think about your sales pitch or speculate whether or not someone will buy from/hire you ? be open minded and refine your listening skills.
  • If you intend to follow up, fold a corner of your new friend?s business card, or put the card in your right pocket (or other special location).
  • Step away from the crowd momentarily to a quiet place if you feel the need to write a note or two for pending follow up.
  • Don?t forget to offer your business card before ending your conversation with a new friend.

?

After the Networking Fun, the Real Work Begins:

  • Before you turn in for the night, review your souvenirs and sort them into ?follow up? and ?no follow up? piles.
  • For those with whom you will follow up, write down some of the highlights of your conversation (for customization).
  • Match your specific follow-up method to each person: email versus LinkedIn invitation versus phone call versus Facebook friending, Twitter following, or Google + circling, etc.
  • If you made a really meaningful/warm connection with someone, consider sending a handwritten note ? this will single you out from the madding crowd!
  • Think about why you are following up with someone and mention/request it: a one-on-one meetup, an online introduction/referral, fulfilling an information request or other offer of help, you?re tired of looking for true love on Match.com (joking!), what?!?
  • Either do your planned follow up within one to two weeks of the actual event or move on (you were expecting a lecture, weren?t you?).

What didn?t I mention that you feel is missing from my offered checklist? When you?re out and about networking, what techniques work best for you? A Guide To Establishing a Delaware LLC | Assassinati - Clayton ...

For an organization to grow, it should create enough profit to expand and diversify its holdings. Those that fall short to do so wind up declaring bankruptcy and shutting their firm. Currently, most entrepreneurs do whatever it takes to cut overhead expenses and stay ahead of the competition. To save cash, they turn to cutting down on staff and outsourcing expertise from other businesses. If youd like to save your business, take into account getting a Delaware llc.

Exactly about LLC: How it Can Benefit You

LLC stands for Limited Liability Company. This includes the elements of a partnership and a corporation. This kind of business is great if you dont want to handle share distribution, bylaws, yearly reports, and various other elements associated with a corporation. In summation, a Delaware LLC is ideal if youre the main owner of your company.

There are lots of benefits on establishing this type of company. Your members could afford limited liability. This means in case the company owes another party a great deal of money, the latter cant go after the assets and properties of the members. The members are protected from this and also have pass-through taxes just like a partnership. They do not need to be concerned about double taxation and going through excess paperwork common when forming a corporation.

One other good thing concerning LLC is you have the freedom and flexibility to make your own organizational structure. Both administrators and members can run the business. There is no need for a board of directors to go over each business decision. Members can deal with matters the management generally needs to make. Compared to S-corporations, an LLC includes less restrictions in terms of choosing administrators and managers.

Easy Steps to file for an LLC

The initial step is filing an incorporation report. This usually poses a challenge, as it is pricey and difficult. Accomplishing this task with no proper guidance may get you in trouble and expose you to different kinds of bureaucracy. For this reason company owners hopeful of making the process easier look for services of companies online. These firms can help you with your Delaware corporation process.

Just before getting any of these online firms, listed below are some elements you must think of:

-Helpfulness is the Key

Ensure the company that will incorporate online may help you with the procedure. This includes telling you if the name you plan on using continues to be available. The online companies should let you know what are the exact requirements are so that the process of incorporation goes smoothly. They should also notify you about the amount you have got to pay for their services. This lets you have a good idea on how much to shell out.

-Informed and Updated

Be sure your selected firm is updated with the current published legal requirements for an incorporation. Laws as well as their requirements change on a regular basis therefore it is essential the business is updated about the legal requirements. This makes sure theyre assisting you in an efficient and right way.

These are just several of the things you need to consider when you distinguish great incorporation service providers online among others. Just before registering your Delaware corporation, ensure you are aware of these important info.

Personal Debt Consolidation | YodZiaN.CoM - Finance and Loan ...

If you?re heavily in debt, a personal debt consolidation loan might seem like the perfect answer. It will roll all your debts into a monthly payment that?s less than you?re currently paying.

And if the rate of interest on your debt is reduced, more of your cash will go towards repaying the money that you?ve borrowed, which means you?ll be debt free in a shorter period of time.

Great!

But these are certain things to consider before you sign on the dotted line for personal debt consolidation.

1) Is A Personal Debt Consolidation Loan Right For You?

Debt consolidation has helped millions of people to get out of dbet, but it?s still a big step. Don?t enter into these agreements lightly. Treat your personal debt consolidation loan as your last chance. Don?t do it unless you?re prepared to cut your spending, stop borrowing and keep going until your debts are history.

2) How much to borrow?

The best plan is to organise a consolidation loan for as little as possible. So if you owe $15000, then consolidate all your personal debts with one consolidation loan of $15000, and not a cent more!

And whatever happens, beware of lenders who encourage you to borrow more than you already owe. Taking the example above, some unscrupulous lenders will show you how you could borrow $20000 or even $25000 and still pay less every month than you do at present. And many people fall into this trap. As soon as they see the opportunity to ?save? money and get another $10000 on the hip they can?t wait to sign the loan agreement.

But these lenders are just taking advantage of the fact that the debt is given at a lower rate of interest and spread over a longer period of time. In the long run, if you borrow more, you?ll have to repay more. So don?t borrow more than you need.

3) Which Type?

There are two main types of personal debt consolidation loans; secured or unsecured.

Secured Consolidation Loan

These loans are normally secured against your home. So if you don?t keep up with the repayments, your lender will sell off your home to get their money. And becuase the lender is taking less of a risk, the interest rate you pay should be much lower than a normal unsecured personal loan. In fact, the APR rate on your personal loan debts could drop from perhaps 10 or 15% to around 5-6%. That?s quite a saving and will certainly help you to repay your debt in a shorter period of time. Secured consolidation loans can be an extremely powerful tool to remove debt if you owe a large amount of money. But as I said, there is a risk that your property could be reposessed.

Another advantage of secured consolidation loans is that your new lender will normally deal with each of your existing lenders and pay them off in full. That can save you a great amount of time and paperwork.

Secured loans are usually set up to be repaid over a longer period of time, anything from 10-30 years. While this may make the monthly repayments easier to manage, it means that your overall debt will cost you more over the entire term of the loan (even with a lower rate of interest).

Unsecured Consolidation Loans

As you might have guessed, an unsecured loan doesn?t require any security. This means the lender is taking more of a risk that they won?t get their money back. In turn, you shouldn?t expect such a low rate of interest. A typical APR for an unsecured personal loan might might be in the region of 7-10% instead of the 5-6% for secured consolidation loans.

In fact, you may find yourself in the position where the interest on the best unsecured deal might not be much less than your current loans. And after you take the setup fees into account, the potential savings might not amount to much. And as unsecured loans tend to be repaid over a shorter timescale (perhaps 5-10 years), your monthly payments may not drop that much. If you find yourself in that position, it may be best to attempt to get a lower rate from your lender(s).

Unsecured personal debt consolidation loans can be arranged quickly and are a useful option if you don?t own a property. However, they tend to be limited to ?25000/$40000 which may be an issue if your debts are much larger.

4) How To Find A Reputable Lender?

When you choose a consolidation loan, it?s make or break time. A good deal that?s right for you will help you to repay your debts. The wrong deal may drag you deeper into financial trouble. So it?s vital to choose the right consolidation lender for your situation. There?s no shortage of debt consolidation loan providers, but the big question is; How do you find a reputable lender that is right for your situation?

Again, you?ve got two main options.

a) Use a broker. These are people who have experience of the consolidation loan market and will know the lenders in your area. They can negotiate to get the best terms on your behalf and will help you to avoid unscrupulous companies.

They will charge a fee, but in the long run they should help you to save much more on your new loan deal.

b) Use the internet. View different sites to compare offers. Read articles like this to expand your knowledge on the subject. Find contact details and approach various lenders to get an idea of what they can offer.

And before you approach anyone about a consolidation loan, do a bit of research to see what kind of rates and fees different lenders charge for someone with your level of debt and credit rating. That will help you to avoid the sharks and get the best deal available.

Finally, here are a few more steps that will help to ensure that you get the right deal;

a) Improve your credit rting. A better rating = Lower interest rate offers

b) Do a budget and work out how much you can afford to repay each month before you approach a lender. Aim to pay as much as possible to speed up the repayment process and save money on interest.

c) Take the lender?s offer and do the calculations yourself to see if the figures add up.

d) Work out the type of deal that you want (secured/unsecured), the amount you want to borrow, the size of your monthly repayments and stick to it. And don?t borrow more than you need.

Hundreds protest toughening Spain's abortion law

MADRID (AP) ? Several hundred people have held a demonstration against a government proposal to make it harder for women to get abortions in Spain.

The protesters in Madrid included one young woman who wrote the slogan "Judges and priests away from my body" on her stomach.

Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon has said he will ask Parliament to change the law, including a new requirement for parental permission in cases where 16- and 17-year-olds want to end pregnancies.

In 2010, Spain's Socialist government changed the law to allow abortions without restrictions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, and for 16- and 17-year-olds without parental permission.

Gallardon's right-leaning Popular Party won a landslide victory in November and has promised to carry out its campaign pledge to tighten abortion laws.

(AP) ? A year into his presidency, Ollanta Humala has proven most popular among the Peruvians who most feared him as a candidate, and least popular with the poor he professed to champion.

His ratings are lackluster, his popularity on a downward slide.

As Humala's approval rating dropped from 59 percent five months ago to 40 percent today, much of the blame owes to his inability to resolve a conflict over Peru's largest mining project in the northern state of Cajamarca.

Local farmers fear for their water supply, and five protesters were shot and killed there earlier this month opposing a government-backed plan for the open-pit Conga gold mine.

As a candidate, Humala had told the region's farmers their access to clean water was more important than the extraction of gold. Then he showed them otherwise, twice imposing states of emergency after anti-Conga violence that suspended civil liberties.

"The betrayal of his electoral promises, I think that's the most important element in the loss of popular support he has," said historian and columnist Nelson Manrique.

Humala, a 50-year-old former army lieutenant colonel, is suffering for taking a hard line against protesters; 17 people have been killed in violent disturbances since he took office.

Most of the conflicts were related to mining, which nets Peru more than two-thirds of its export earnings.

The political left has largely abandoned Humala, and he's been widely lambasted in the press for allegedly deficient leadership. He's changed his Cabinet chief three times, his interior minister four.

Humala himself has acknowledged shortcomings.

In a recent public act, he said "We're all learning here."

"We are sure to commit errors," the president continued. "Nobody is born knowing it all. We all learn in the doing."

A former interior minister, Fernando Rospigliosi, is among Humala's harshest critics.

"I think he has no idea what to do in nearly every realm save the economy, which he has put in the hands of people who know what they're doing ," he said, claiming Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, "are adrift and have no idea what to do with the country."

Heredia is widely considered the person who most influences Humala. Rather than engaging in activities traditionally reserved for Peru's first lady she manages her own, often separate agenda, frequently accompanied by ministers on her missions.

"Where is my minister?" Heredia recently asked in front of TV cameras at one event, at which point the education minister dutifully appeared.

There is skepticism about Humala's economic development agenda. Fifty-two percent of Peruvians think he has no clear plan, according to a poll published last Sunday by the GfK firm with an error margin of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Peru's poverty rate has dropped 22 percentage points in the past two decades. But 28 percent of Peruvians still live in poverty, according to government figures.

Humala defends Conga for the billions of dollars he says it will fund programs for Peru's neediest people.

He's put some money from mining royalties to work for the poor but the help they've provided so far has been modest.

A program called "Juntos" that provides $37 a month to people living in extreme poverty had 474,064 beneficiaries in 2011. The government hopes to nearly double that number this year.

Another, which gives $94 a month to the elderly poor, benefited 41,253 people last year.

Humala created a Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion to oversee and amplify such programs though its minister, Carolina Trivelli, told The Associated Press that her office is still working on ways to measure the programs' effectiveness and reach.

"The president follows closely what we do," she said.

The programs have had some effect, with 31 percent of Peruvians saying that developing social programs is something Humala has done "well" or "very well," according the GfK survey.

But that's not solving the Conga conundrum. A 30-day state of emergency there lapses next week with no end to the conflict in sight and two Roman Catholic churchmen trying to mediate.

Humala is now looked upon far more favorably, meanwhile, by Peru's political right and the wealthy, which tended to vote for his rival in last year's election, Keiko Fujimori, daughter of jailed former President Alberto Fujimori.

A poll by the Ipsos Apoyo firm published in mid-July found 46 percent backing for Humala among Peru's upper class while its lower classes expressed 36 and 39 percent support. The poll had an error margin of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

The business community is pleased by 6 percent growth in the past year, a laudable pace at a time that major industrialized nations remain in an economic funk.

Humberto Speziani, president of Peru's main business group CONFIEP, calls Humala pragmatic.

"He is very conscious that without private investment you can't create jobs and you can't eliminate poverty."

Militant Northern Irish groups merge to reclaim IRA banner

BELFAST (Reuters) - Three of the four main militant nationalist groups in Northern Ireland said they are merging and reclaiming the banner of the IRA in a threat to intensify a campaign of violence against the continued British presence in the province.

The Real IRA has been joined by Republican Action Against Drugs - a Londonderry vigilante group - and what a statement described as "non conformist republicans" - smaller independent groups operating in Belfast and rural areas of Northern Ireland.

It is the first time since the signing of a 1998 peace deal which copper-fastened the Provisional IRA's ceasefire that most of the disparate republican groups still intent on violence have come together under a single leadership.

But the Continuity IRA, the other main dissident nationalist group opposed to the peace deal, which largely ended three decades of violence in which over 3,600 people died, is not part of the new organization.

The Continuity IRA said in a separate statement on Thursday that it had a new leadership and was intent on pursuing its own campaign for a united Ireland.

International monitors confirmed in 2005 that the Irish Republican Army had given up all its weapons. But sporadic violence has increased in recent years with the Real IRA, which was behind the murder of two British soldiers shot dead outside an army base in 2009, leading the way.

The new group said on Thursday it had formed a "unified structure, under a single leadership" and that it would be "subservient to the constitution of the Irish Republican Army" - the banner under which opposition to British involvement in Ireland has operated for more than a century.

It includes independent dissidents who have been responsible for the murder of one policeman, injury of others and a series of attacks on officers in recent years.

The statement of their intent to intensify terror attacks was issued to a Guardian journalist who was called to a secret meeting in a forest on the Irish border.

Nationalist sources said the new group includes several hundred armed dissidents, including some former members of the Provisional IRA disenchanted with the peace process and their political wing - Sinn Fein - for taking their place in a power-sharing government with former unionists foes.

The leader of the mainstream nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), Alasdair McDonald, condemned the new group and said it would be resisted every step of the way.

"Neither this new so-called IRA , the Continuity IRA or any other iteration of dissident threat will destabilize the structures and partnerships that have underpinned the relative peace of the last 14 years," McDonald said in a statement.

Relationship Rescue: A Seven-Step Strategy for Reconnecting with ...

Relationship Rescue: A Seven-Step Strategy for Reconnecting with Your Partner

As a follow-up to his bestselling book Life Strategies, Oprah acolyte Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D., moves from aiding the aimless individual to coaching the disconnected couple. McGraw has distilled his more than two decades of counseling experience into a seven-step strategy he calls ?Relationship Rescue.?"I?m prepared to kick a hole in the wall of the pain-ridden, unhappy maze you?ve gotten yourself into, and provide you clear access to action-oriented answers and instructions on what you must do to have what you want,? says Dr. Phil. His aim is to expose and eliminate the saboteurs that cause senseless damage to already-fragile marriages, and, like an emotional root canal, to replace them with values he says provide positive results. If you follow Dr. Phil?s strategy, he will lead you on a precise journey to uncover your heart and then share it with your partner as part of taking the ?risk of intimacy.?Dr. Phil leads you to ?reconnect with your core? in the first five steps of his seven-step strategy. By no means a quick fix, there are in-depth and rigorous questionnaires, surveys, tests, and profiles that require a ?brutally candid? mindset, with such fill-in-the-blanks as ?List five things that today would make you fall out of love with your partner.? With this internal work accomplished, you?ll then move on to reconnecting with your partner during a two-week, half-hour-a-day short course. As a ?dyad,? you and your loved one take turns giving monologues on topics such as ?The most positive thing I took away from my mother and father?s relationship was??Once the ?reconnection? has been established, Dr. Phil says the work shifts to a management role, as relationships are always a work in progress. Dr. Phil humorously refers to his own marriage throughout the book, sharing his mishaps and victories in learning to accept and enjoy what he sees as fundamental but complementary differences between men and women. ?John Youngs

US weighs more Syria aid if rebels get safe zones

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is weighing its options for more direct involvement in the Syrian civil war if the rebels opposing the Assad regime can wrest enough control to create a safe haven for themselves, U.S. officials said.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says it's only a matter of time before the rebels have enough territory and organization to create such areas.

"More and more territory is being taken," Clinton said this week. "It will eventually result in a safe haven inside Syria, which will then provide a base for further actions by the opposition."

Officials are already starting to brainstorm how a safe zone might allow Washington to step up its assistance, which has been limited to humanitarian aid and nonlethal equipment such as medical supplies and communications gear.

A senior American official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the administration's thinking publicly, said the U.S. is seeing "increased unity, cohesion and better military performance" among the rebels, including greater effectiveness in coordinating attacks, which the administration sees as proof the rebels are better employing the encrypted radios supplied by the U.S.

For now, U.S. officials are standing by their assertion that they won't provide arms to Syria's anti-Assad forces or push for a no-fly zone over rebel-controlled areas. With Syria's government fighting back forcefully against opposition offensives in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere, it's still unclear whether the rebels could create a secure staging ground for the rebellion.

The Libyan militia that chased from power and killed Moammar Gadhafi last year had set up the city of Benghazi as a safe haven, creating a central place to meet and strategize and an entry point for supplies from NATO and Arab countries. The U.S. set up a consulate.

The discussions on Syria come as the U.S. and its international partners look for a possibly game-changing shift in the country's bloody, 16-month conflict, which began with Syrian President Bashar Assad's brutal crackdown on protesters, followed by dissenters taking up arms against the government. More than 19,000 people have been killed, according to opposition activists, and despite increased cracks in the regime's military and political stability, there remains little to suggest an imminent end to the violence.

The establishment of a safe zone would settle one issue: the lack of an actual place inside Syria for other nations to engage with the opposition on the ground and deliver supplies into the heart of the conflict.

The U.S. would be able to shift Syrian-watching officials they've deployed in places such as Jordan and Turkey into Syria. And governments such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar that have been providing weapons to the opposition would have a more direct pipeline for military assistance.

But officials cannot point to when the rebels might be able to carve out some autonomous space for themselves within Syria. The rebels remain heavily outgunned by Assad's better trained forces. And while they've been able to increase the breadth of their attacks across Syria, they've been constantly forced to cede back any temporary territorial gains they make.

Under the current circumstances, U.S. diplomatic efforts have been stymied. Russia and China have shielded the Assad regime from U.N. Security Council action three times, most recently last week. And U.S.-led efforts such as sanctions and a campaign of international isolation may have sapped Syria's government of funds, but not its resolve to crush what it regards as an armed insurgency.

In the last month, the Obama administration has spoken of the rebels' growing ability to challenge the Assad regime's military supremacy.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor noted the pace of high-level regime defections was accelerating and that the U.S. and its partners were still advocating a political transition away from four decades of dictatorship under the Assad family dynasty. The sooner that happens, he said, "the greater the chance we have of averting a lengthy and bloody sectarian civil war and the better we'll be able to help Syrians manage a stable transition to democracy."

Clinton went a step further earlier this week, offering a battlefield picture that included Syria's ragtag alliance of militia beginning to take control of parts of the country.

She said the opposition should be preparing for how it will maintain order when it controls territory.

"They have to start working on interim governing entities. They have to commit to protecting the rights of all Syrians, every group of Syrians. They have to set up humanitarian response efforts that we can also support. They've got to safeguard the chemical and biological weapons that we know the Syrian regime has," she said.

The U.S. is also preparing, though it doesn't want to call its shots. And administration officials insist that it won't be the U.S. military that creates safe zones for the Syrian opposition ? as proponents of intervention such as Republican Sen. John McCain have proposed.

Since the Syrian conflict started, U.S. officials have repeatedly cited the lack of a safe zone in Syrian territory as one of several hindrances to more aggressive American assistance ? from establishing a no-fly zone over parts of the country to providing weaponry to the opposition.

Other hurdles have included a lack of regional and international consensus, the opposition's disorganization and internal rivalries, the inability to get any U.N. mandate for action and a lingering sense that American or other foreign intervention might actually mean more lives lost than saved. American officials also say involvement could prompt greater instability in a powder-keg region.

The opposition has been essentially limited to hit-and-run attacks and unable to hold any major Syrian population centers. In addition, officials note that the Assad regime is unlikely to cede a city like Aleppo without the kind of fight the rebels are unable to win.

The likely result is that any territory the rebels are able to take, occupy and defend will be far from the Mediterranean coast and not well served by existing infrastructure like good roads, solid bridges, power and water. That would complicate the establishment of foreign consulates or liaison offices, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they said planning was at an early stage and they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Underscoring the value some see in the safe zones, more than 60 foreign policy experts and former U.S. government officials sent a letter to President Barack Obama this week urging him to use U.S. air power immediately to patrol territory seized by the opposition. The mainly Republican group accused the president of "complicity in oppression" for failing to halt the bloodshed.

The Federal Reserve Bank and Apple Stock Price Today ? Apple hit as

The Federal Reserve Bank and Apple Stock Price TodayGlobal stocks continued their losing streak last night as fears concerning Europe and the continuing global slowdown weighed heavily on investor sentiment. It looks like the Federal Reserve Bank in the U.S. is starting to scramble and we will touch on that a little later. The Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ all closed down between .80 percent and .95 percent while in Europe the hits were larger. The Spanish stock market has been absolutely slammed recently and last night was no exception with it falling 3.58 percent.

It seems clear now that Greece cannot repay what is owed at the moment and that means that either there will need to be more debt restructuring, meaning more loss for the creditors or potentially no more money for Greece and a shove out of the European Union. We will have to wait and see how things play out over the next few days.

The Federal Reserve Bank, as part of its operation twist scheme, purchased $1.81 billion dollars? worth of treasuries that have due dates ranging from February 2036 to May 2042. The aim is to swap short term treasuries they own for long, in an effort to being borrowing costs lower to therefore in turn, stimulate the economy ? As people or companies will find it easier to handle borrowing at lower interest rates.? Apparently there will also be meetings next week to determine whether the Fed will begin another round of stimulus?

The sale of treasuries has also been rising of late with yields falling to record lows for two consecutive days. ?In the U.S. $35 billion worth of two-year bond notes were at yields of record low prices and they are scheduled to sell the same amount again tomorrow. The yield for 10 year notes declined to 1.3875 percent and the thirty year bond fell to 2.4530 percent. Investors are still flooding in to pick up these investments. At such a low rate of return many are left wondering why investors would be convinced these bonds are a good investment, particularly with the huge debt load the U.S. already has and is unlikely to be able to pay back.

Over to earnings season now and Apple was butchered and if we look at the Apple Stock Price Today we saw it lost 5 percent in after-hours trading. This is apparently the first time in 39 quarters that Apple has reported results that missed analyst predictions. Apple have partly blamed expectations of their upcoming IPhone 5 release for the loss, ?claiming that anticipation of their new model stopped consumers purchasing current phones on offer. They of course also pointed to the economic slowdown. Either way, it does highlight that the Apple Brand is losing some of its resistance to global economic pressures as the financial crisis continues. It will be interesting to see whether or not Apple can bounce back after the release of their new phone.

    Big Picture

As the crisis winds on, the effects are being felt by companies once considered to be insulated from global slowdown. We spoke about the McDonald Stock Price yesterday and now the Apple Stock Price today. As things continue to fall apart in Europe, it may be that these effects will be more pronounced in the coming quarters.

It is also interesting to note that investors are still flocking to bonds as a safe haven investment, particularly when the fulfillment of these investments relies on the ability of governments already too heavily indebted, to pay the bond debts back. ?We will need to pay close attention to what the Federal Reserve Bank does next week.

Facebook's day of reckoning: 2Q earnings report

(AP) ? It's showtime for Facebook. Call it the second act after its rocky initial public offering two months ago. On Thursday, the company will take the spotlight once again for its first earnings report as a public company.

Facebook's fate hinges on its ability to convince businesses that the ads on its website and on its mobile application are effective. To do that, the world's largest online social network needs to keep its nearly 1 billion users logging on as often ? and for as long ? as possible, interacting with each other as well as with brands.

The release of its quarterly financial results will be Facebook's chance to prove to investors that it can continue growing revenue from the ads it serves on its popular social networking site.

It comes a day after Zynga Inc., which contributed to 12 percent of Facebook's revenue last year, reported disappointing earnings. Facebook's stock slid in after-market trading Wednesday, as did Zynga's.

Though there's a lot riding on Facebook's second-quarter earnings report, Wall Street analysts aren't expecting big surprises.

Why? Facebook effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

As a result of that disclosure and others, many analysts reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

On average, analysts are expecting Facebook to post earnings of 12 cents per share on revenue of $1.16 billion, according to a poll by FactSet. In all of 2011, it had net income of $1 billion and revenue of $3.71 billion, according to regulatory filings.

Facebook, the company founded by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dormitory in 2004, takes another important step in its evolution into a multi-national company with thousands of employees. Facebook went public on May 18, a Friday that capped a disappointing week for the U.S. stock market. After months of hoopla, Facebook saw its stock land with a thud, its debut marred by Nasdaq glitches that delayed trading.

Company-watchers will be scrutinizing the way in which it conducts its first public financial release. Will Zuckerberg host the entire conference call with analysts? or simply say a few words before letting company's financial team explain how the quarter unfolded? Among the call's other likely participants: Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and finance chief David Ebersman.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter believes it's unlikely that Facebook will miss Wall Street's estimates. He added that the banks that led Facebook's IPO likely advised the company to beat expectations for its first public quarter, something that became more achievable once estimates declined.

Facebook makes the bulk of its money from advertising. Because people share so much about themselves on the social network ? from hobbies to birth announcements ? Facebook's bet is that it can offer highly targeted ads that people are likely to be interested in. The company also uses people's personal relationships to target advertisements. The assumption is that people will be more interested in products and services that their friends like.

A smaller chunk of Facebook's revenue comes from its payments service, the system third-party developers such as game company Zynga Inc. use to charge fees for games and other content on the cite. Facebook takes a portion of the money users pay, usually 30 percent.

Besides revenue growth, what Facebook says about user numbers will be important. Not just how many people use the site, but how often and for how long. Facebook has 901 million monthly active users and 526 million daily active users, according to its latest filings. Each month, 488 million users accessed Facebook using a mobile device.

Investors and analysts who follow the earnings report will want to hear how the company can make money from its fast-growing mobile user base.

"The specific challenge for Facebook is that it is only just now starting to try to monetize this mobile usage," Citi Investment Research analyst Mark Mahaney said in a note to investors. Facebook's current plan, he said, is to insert so-called "sponsored stories" ? ads into people's mobile feeds. The ads are based on friends' activities.

"But it is very unclear how this will play out, how users will react to changes to what has been an ad-free mobile experience to date, and whether these ads will be effective on mobile devices," the analyst wrote.

It's unclear if Facebook will offer its outlook for the current quarter and beyond. Not all companies do. Apple does, while Google Inc. doesn't and never has. If Facebook does provide a forecast, Pachter thinks it will be conservative. The company has no reason to anger investors who have already pushed its stock down 24 percent from its $38 IPO price.

Facebook will report its earnings on Thursday after the stock market closes. It will hold a conference call to discuss the earnings at 5 p.m. ET.

On Wednesday, the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company's stock closed up 89 cents at $29.34. It fell nearly 8 percent to $27.04 in extended trading after Zynga's report came out.

The stock has traded from $25.52 to $45 since going public. It has not risen above $38 since its first trading day.
