Jennifer Lee Hired to Co-Direct Disney's Frozen

jennifer-lee-frozen-slice

Disney?s upcoming animated feature Frozen just landed an additional director.? The Mouse House announced today that Jennifer Lee will be joining Chris Buck (Tarzan) as co-director on the princess movie.? Kristen Bell?voices a young dreamer named Anna who teams up with ?a daring mountain man? to find the Snow Queen (Idina Menzel) and put an end to a spell that has trapped their kingdom in eternal winter.? The film harkens back to some of Disney?s earlier, more music-centered films as it will feature original songs from Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (In Transit).

Lee has already contributed to the screenplay for Frozen, so it appears she?s been involved with the project for a while.? She most recently was credited as one of the screenwriters for Disney?s Wreck-It Ralph, so hopefully she can bring some of the humor and heart of that film over to Frozen.? Hit the jump to read the press release.? The film opens in 3D on November 27, 2013.

BURBANK, Calif. (November 29, 2012)?? Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) taps Jennifer Lee to join Chris Buck at the helm of its 53rd?full-length animated feature ?Frozen,? which is slated for the big screen on Nov. 27, 2013. Lee, who has contributed to the film?s screenplay, is one of the screenplay writers of this year?s hit arcade-hopping adventure ?Wreck-It Ralph.?

Featuring the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel,??Frozen? is the coolest comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen. When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna,?a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on?an epic journey?to find Anna?s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

?Frozen? producer Peter Del Vecho says the match-up is perfect. ?Jenn has a real connection to the film and creates dynamic and relatable characters. Her sense of comedy, adventure and story structure paired with Chris Buck?s vast experience and incredible instincts create an ideal situation for this film.?

Lee?s screen adaptation of John Steinbeck?s ?The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights? is being produced by Troika Pictures. She has an original screenplay in development with Leonardo DiCaprio?s Appian Way, and her original script ?Lucid Dreams? was optioned by Wolfgang Peterson?s Radiant Productions. Lee holds an MFA in Film from Columbia University and a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire.

Buck directed (with Kevin Lima) Disney?s 1999 high-swinging feature ?Tarzan,? which won an Oscar? and a Golden Globe? for Best Music/Original Song (Phil Collins? ?You?ll Be in My Heart?). He directed (with Ash Brannon) 2007?s Oscar-nominated ?Surf?s Up? for Sony Pictures Animation.?His credits?within?animation also include 1989?s ?The Little Mermaid,? ?The Rescuers Down Under? (1990) and ?Pocahontas? (1995).

With original songs by Tony?-award winner Robert Lopez (?The Book of Mormon,? ?Avenue Q?) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (?In Transit?),??Frozen??journeys into theaters Nov. 27, 2013, in Disney Digital 3D? in select theaters. 3 Swedish Christmas recipes | Food & Drink | Wanderlust

Christmas is less than one month away. Taste a different type of festive feast this year with these alternative Swedish recipes

1. Jansson?s temptation

Jansson?s temptation or Janssons frestelse ? a creamy potato and anchovy casserole ? is said to have been named for Pelle Janzon, a food-loving Swedish opera singer of the early 20th century.

The recipe was published for the first time in 1940, and this rich casserole quickly became a classic of the Swedish Christmas dinner table. But Jansson's temptation can just as easily be eaten at any time of year.

Makes: 6-8 servings

Ingredients:

1.2 kg potatoes
400g onions
375g spice-cured sprat (anchovy)?filets
6dl heavy whipping cream
salt and?white pepper, to taste
breadcrumbs
butter

Preparation:

1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into strips. Peel and cut the onions into thin slices, saut?ing them gently in a little butter without browning.

2. Grease an ovenproof baking dish and cover the bottom with a layer of potatoes, then add half the onions and half the sprat filets. Add another layer of potatoes, then the rest of the onion and sprats. Finish with a layer of potatoes.

3. Flatten the surface, apply a few turns of pepper fresh from the mill and sprinkle on a little salt. Pour the cream on until it is almost visible through the potatoes. Place a few pats of butter on top and, if desired, sprinkle with some bread crumbs.

4. Bake in the oven (250'C/475'F) for about an hour.

2. Saffron buns and gingersnaps

Saffransbullar and pepparkakor means saffron buns and gingersnaps. These are among the traditional Swedish Christmas treats. The sweet yeast rolls that are served during the Christmas season are flavored with golden saffron and dark raisins and often shaped into ?Lucia cats? (lussekatter, pictured).

The gingersnaps are customarily cut in the shape of little men and women, pigs or hearts, and are often decorated with frosting. It is not uncommon for children to help build little houses out of gingersnap dough to celebrate Christmas.

But sweet yeast buns without saffron are eaten year-round in Sweden, usually in the form of cinnamon buns. Gingersnaps are also eaten year round, though most of the time they are not home-made and are generally just round in shape.

Makes: 25 buns

Ingredients:
??
3g?saffron threads
50g?yeast
2?dl?sugar
3dl?milk
1 egg
150?200g?butter
1 tsp salt
750g?flour
1? dl?raisins

Glaze:

1 egg
2 tbs water

Preparation:

1. To make "Lucia cats", grind the saffron along with a cube of sugar, using a mortar and pestle. (For those who think ahead: drip a little cognac on top, and let stand a few days.)

2. Crumble the yeast in a bowl and stir in a few tablespoons of milk. Melt the butter and pour on the milk. Add the rest of the ingredients, except the raisins, and knead the dough in a dough mixer for?ten minutes. Carefully mix in most of the raisins, cover the dough and let it rise for 30 minutes at room temperature.

3. Divide the dough into 25 pieces and roll the buns in an oblong shape, about 10cm?long. Cover them and let rest for?ten minutes, then roll them twice as long and twist the ends of each bun in opposite directions to form a sort of figure 8.

4. Put one raisin in the middle of each half figure 8.

5. Place on a greased baking sheet and let rise under a towel for about 90 minutes, or until the buns have doubled in size.

6. Bake in the oven (220'C/425'F) for?five minutes. Beat together the egg and water, brush the mixture on the buns. Allow to cool on the baking sheet.

3. Pepparkakor (gingersnaps)

Ingredients:

3 dl brown sugar
2? dl white sugar
1? dl dark corn syrup
1? dl water
300g butter
2 tbs ground cinnamon
2 tbs ground ginger
2 tbs ground cloves
1 tbs baking soda
0.9?1kg flour

Preparation:

1. Heat the brown sugar, white sugar, corn syrup and water in a pot. Add the butter and let it melt. Stir and let cool slightly, then blend in the spices and baking soda.

2. Then mix in the flour to a smooth consistency.

3. Sprinkle a little flour on top and put the dough out to cool, preferably overnight.

4. Take the dough and knead it smooth on a baking table, adding more flour if desired. Roll it thin and cut into shapes, using the desired cookie cutters.

5. Bake in the oven (180'C/350'F) for eight to ten minutes. Let the gingersnaps cool on the baking sheet.

Majority of Britons want press watchdog backed by law - poll

LONDON (Reuters) - More than two-thirds of Britons are in favour of an independent press regulator established by law, according to an opinion poll published in the Guardian newspaper on Wednesday, a day before a judge is expected to issue a report on problems in the industry.

The poll found that 79 percent of Britons surveyed want the government to introduce legislation to create an independent press regulator. Only 9 percent oppose tough measures regulating the press.

Senior judge Brian Leveson is expected on Thursday to recommend a new independent body with statutory powers over the press instead of the current system of self-regulation that the industry wants to retain.

Leveson oversaw a year-long public inquiry into the press that was prompted by a phone-hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World Sunday, a News Corp (NWSA.O) tabloid the media tycoon then shut down.

The poll, conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Media Standards Trust, found that over 80 percent want national newspapers to be obliged to sign up to the new system by law.

Most of the British newspaper industry is opposed to a regulator underpinned by law, as they argue it would curb freedom of speech.

Battlefield 3: Aftermath out now for PlayStation 3 - Video Games - Digit

The latest DLC for Battlefield 3 is now out. DICE had announced that the DLC, titled Aftermath, would be set for release in December.

DICE released a launch trailer to commemorate the event. The trailer features some fast-paced gameplay and some of the new maps included in the new DLC. The DLC is available for PS3 Battlefield 3: Premium subscribers. PC and Xbox 360 owners however, will have to wait till December.

DICE?s Niklas Fegraeus revealed the names of the new maps that will be in the DLC. They included Markaz Monolith, Epicenter, Talah Market and Azadi Palace.

Prior to the launch, DICE released trailers which showcased a new weapon that would be available in Aftermath, namely the crossbow. DICE describes it as a weapon made of salvaged parts ? the weapon of a survivor. Trailers show the crossbow to be incredibly versatile, from being able to be used as a regular killing weapon to being able to take out vehicles like helicopters with well-aimed shots. It features a range of modified bolts and can have any kind of scope attached to it. The bolts include regular ones, which are best used for short distances, another lets you sweep an area to detect enemies, and also an explosive bolt to take out heavy vehicles and infantry.

DICE had also revealed details about a new game mode in Battlefield 3 which will be included in the Aftermath DLC. Craig McLeod, DICE producer, said, ?Scavenger really is born out of the Aftermath theme. We wanted the players to feel like, ?I?ve just been trapped in this earthquake and I?m not going to have all of my equipment, I?m not going to have everything I used to have.? So you are literally rising up with a pistol, a grenade and a specialization.?

Obese flier turned away by airlines dies overseas

2 hrs.

An ailing, 425-pound woman who was turned away by three airlines as she tried to return to the U.S. from Europe has died overseas, prompting legal action from her family.

Vilma Soltesz and her husband traveled to Hungary in September to spend a month in their former homeland ? a trek the Bronx residents made every year to visit family.

They flew from New York to Budapest on KLM without any problems, with Soltesz purchasing two seats for herself because of her size, said Holly Ostrov Ronai, the family?s attorney.

But when the couple tried to return to New York in October, the problems began.

?They were sent from airline to airline, they were sent driving around, they were just treated completely inhumanely,? Ronai told NBC News. ?(The airlines) had a duty to get her home to her doctors.?

Soltesz, 56, and her husband came on board their scheduled KLM flight to New York on Oct. 15 with the help of a Skylift elevator, but the captain told them to disembark because of an issue with the seatback and because the airline didn?t have a seatbelt extender, Ronai said.

KLM countered that it was not physically possible for Soltesz to board the aircraft, despite every effort made by the airline.

?A seat or belt extender did not offer a solution either,? said KLM spokeswoman Ellen van Ginkel, in a statement to NBC News.

?Subsequently, KLM and its partners Delta and Air France did it utmost to find an alternative in the two days that followed. The passenger also took the initiative herself to approach her ticket agent to look for alternatives with other airlines.?

The couple spent five hours at the airport and then drove through the night to Prague, where they were told a bigger Delta Air Lines plane could take them home the next day. But that attempt was also unsuccessful because Delta only had a plastic wheelchair that was not able to hold Soltesz's weight, Ronai said.

Delta did not respond to a request for comment, but a spokesman for the airline told The New York Post that ?despite a determined good-faith effort by Delta in Prague, we were also physically unable to board her on our aircraft.?

Finally, the couple tried to return to New York on a Lufthansa flight on Oct. 22. They boarded the plane, but the captain asked them to disembark because he thought Soltesz could not fasten herself in properly, Ronai said.

Lufthansa said the decision was unavoidable.

?Lufthansa, together with its local partners, fire brigade and technical experts at Budapest Airport tried its utmost to accommodate Mrs. Vilma Soltesz on board our flight from Budapest,? said spokeswoman Christina Semmel.

?After several, time consuming attempts it was decided that for the safety of this passenger and the over 140 fellow passengers, Lufthansa had to deny transportation of the passenger.?

Hungarian television footage of the couple after the incident showed Soltesz???an amputee who suffered from kidney disease and diabetes???with a severely distended belly. She died two days later.

Ronai, who plans to sue the three airlines involved for $6 million in federal court next week, said they violated the Air Carrier Access Act by not providing Soltesz with proper assistance or making the proper accommodations for her to be able to fly home and seek medical care from her doctors. This ultimately caused her death, Ronai said.

Under the Air Carrier Access Act, airlines may not refuse to fly people because of their disability, but they may exclude anyone from a flight ?if carrying the person would be inimical to the safety of the flight.??

?Airlines are responsible for determining whether or not they can carry passengers safely, and that includes those with disabilities. They may decline boarding if they believe they?re not able to do so,? said DOT spokesman Bill Mosley.

A carrier that excludes a person with a disability on safety grounds must provide a written explanation, but the Soltesz family never received any such document, Ronai said.

Meanwhile, the European Union, which includes Hungary, mandates that air travelers with ?reduced mobility? can't be denied boarding, unless the aircraft is physically too small or there are security concerns.

Obesity in itself is not considered a disability and it?s up to each airline to decide how to deal with large passengers, Mosley said.

There is also no specific rule that requires airlines to carry seatbelt extenders, said Les Dorr, an FAA spokesman. Planes must be equipped with an approved safety belt for each passenger, but the only way to meet the "approved" requirement for large fliers is for the airline to furnish the extenders, Dorr said.

With more than one-third of U.S. adults now obese, airlines continue to grapple with how to accommodate those fliers. Most now have policies addressing ?customers of size? ? usually asking them to buy two seats if they can?t lower their armrests or overflow into a neighbor?s seat.

Airfarewatchdog.com recently put together a guide listing each carrier?s approach and was surprised by the lack of uniformity.

Meanwhile, Soltesz?s family is grieving their loss.

?This should not have happened at all and it should never happen to anyone else, ever,? Ronai said.

Will a Probe of California Oil Refineries Prove Market Manipulation?

Relying on a Nov. 15 McCullough Research report, six senators from the West Coast are calling on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch a "refinery-by-refinery probe," a press release by Senator Dianne Feinstein notes. Allegations suggest that the 66-cent per gallon of gasoline price increase yielded a $25-million a day profit for oil companies. "The difference between what drivers actually paid and what they should have paid exceeded $1 billion," the senators claim.

Oct. 5: California Gasoline Prices Jump by 20 Cents to 40 Cents per Gallon

The Associated Press reported that the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $4.49. Southern California and the Bay Area were hit particularly hard, with some gas stations charging $4.54 or $4.60 for a gallon of gas. Fuel retailers note that refinery problems had contributed to the shortages.

Oct. 7: California Governor Considers Early Release of Winter-blend Fuel

The State of California requires the use of a specifically formulated summer blend to be sold at the pump until Oct. 31. CBS Los Angeles and the Associated Press reported that Gov. Jerry Brown discussed an early switch to the more readily available winter blend with operating refineries. By this time, gasoline prices had climbed to an average of $4.70 in Los Angeles. Statewide, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline had increased to $4.65, which surpassed the previous high mark of $4.60 in June 2008. Responsibility for the sudden spike in gasoline prices was apportioned to a Southern California refinery suffering a Monday power outage.

Nov. 5: Gasoline Drops below $4 per Gallon

The Los Angeles Times noted that the statewide average cost for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $3.97. Nevertheless, the cost of gasoline was still more than 13 cents above the price charged in November 2011. California energy experts "blamed the spike on low gasoline supplies, low fuel production, a year of numerous refinery outages and exports of fuel to overseas customers."

Nov. 21: Gas Priced Fell by almost 90 Cents

Just before Thanksgiving, California gasoline prices averaged $3.77, the L.A. Times reported. This represented another 6.9-cent drop compared to the week before. The Los Angeles area saw gasoline prices of $3.82 cents per gallon, which was lower than the Central Coast region where the cost still reached $3.89.

Nov. 27: Six West Coast Senators Call for DOJ Probe into "Possible Market Manipulation and False Reporting by Oil Refineries"

The New Guard pinpoints the Exxon Mobile refinery in Torrance as the causation for the spike in gasoline prices that had affected California and indeed the West Coast. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., joined with Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Patty Murray, D-Wash., Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., in calling for a DOJ investigation, Feinstein's press release notes.

"We are requesting a Department of Justice investigation of possible market manipulation and false reporting by oil refineries which may have created a perception of a supply shortage, when in fact refineries were still producing," the senators said.

Sylvia Cochran is a Los Angeles area resident with a firm finger on the pulse of California politics. Talk radio junkie, community volunteer and politically independent, she scrutinizes the good and the bad from both sides of the political aisle.

Ancient microbes found living beneath the icy surface of Antarctic lake

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? This week a pioneering study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and co-authored by Dr. Alison Murray and Dr. Christian Fritsen of Nevada's Desert Research Institute (DRI) reveals, for the first time, a viable community of bacteria that survives and ekes out a living in a dark, salty and subfreezing environment beneath nearly 20 meters of ice in one of Antarctica's most isolated lakes.

Lake Vida, the largest of several unique lakes found in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, contains no oxygen, is mostly frozen and possesses the highest nitrous oxide levels of any natural water body on Earth. A briny liquid that is approximately six times saltier than seawater percolates throughout the icy environment that has an average temperature of minus 13.5 degrees centigrade (or 8 degrees Fahrenheit).

"This study provides a window into one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth," said Murray, the report's lead author, and molecular microbial ecologist and polar researcher for the past 17 years, who has participated in 14 expeditions to the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent. "Our knowledge of geochemical and microbial processes in lightless icy environments, especially at subzero temperatures, has been mostly unknown up until now. This work expands our understanding of the types of life that can survive in these isolated, cryoecosystems and how different strategies may be used to exist in such challenging environments."

Despite the very cold, dark and isolated nature of the habitat, the report finds that the brine harbors a surprisingly diverse and abundant assemblage of bacteria that survive without a present-day source of energy from the sun. Previous studies of Lake Vida dating back to 1996 indicate that the brine and its' inhabitants have been isolated from outside influences for more than 3,000 years.

Murray and her co-authors and collaborators, including the project's principal investigator Dr. Peter Doran of the University of Illinois at Chicago, developed stringent protocols and specialized equipment for their 2005 and 2010 field campaigns to sample the lake brine while avoiding contaminating the pristine ecosystem.

To sample the unique environment researchers worked under secure, sterile tents on the lake's surface to keep the site and equipment clean as they drilled ice cores, collected samples of the salty brine residing in the lake ice and then assessed the chemical qualities of the water and its potential for harboring and sustaining life, in addition to describing the diversity of the organisms detected.

Geochemical analyses suggest that chemical reactions between the brine and the underlying iron-rich sediments generate nitrous oxide and molecular hydrogen. The latter, in part, may provide the energy needed to support the brine's diverse microbial life.

"It's plausible that a life-supporting energy source exists solely from the chemical reaction between anoxic salt water and the rock," explained Fritsen, a systems microbial ecologist and Research Professor in DRI's Division of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences.

"If that's the case," echoed Murray. "This gives us an entirely new framework for thinking of how life can be supported in cryoecosystems on earth and in other icy worlds of the universe."

Murray added further research is currently under way to analyze the abiotic, chemical interactions between the Lake Vida brine and the sediment, in addition to investigating the microbial community by using different genome sequencing approaches. The results could help explain the potential for life in other salty, cryogenic environments beyond Earth.

The Lake Vida brine also represents a cryoecosystem that is a suitable and accessible analog for the soils, sediments, wetlands, and lakes underlying the Antarctic ice sheet that other polar researchers are just now beginning to explore.

Boise to raise sewer rates | Boise, Garden City, Mountain Home ...

The new rates would increase monthly fees for single-family homes by 70 cents to $23.93, according to an analysis by city staff. The City Council is scheduled to hear a third and final reading of the proposal Tuesday.

In addition to slightly higher residential rates, the city is proposing a onetime $12 fee for new accounts and increased fees for dumping sewage.

If the City Council approves the measure Tuesday, the new fee structure will go into effect Jan. 1.

City staff predicted the fee increases will generate more than $500,000 to the city's yearly budget. That money would help fund upgrades to Boise's sewer treatment plants as the city works toward reducing the amount of phosphorous in the treated wastewater the plants release, spokesman Vince Trimboli said.

Syrian rebels capture air base near Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels captured a helicopter base just outside Damascus Sunday in what an activist called a "blow to the morale of the regime" near President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

The takeover claim showed how rebels are advancing in the area of the capital, though they are badly outgunned, making inroads where Assad's power was once unchallenged. Rebels have also been able to fire mortar rounds into Damascus recently.

The director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said rebels seized control of the Marj al-Sultan base on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday morning. He said at least 15 rebels and eight soldiers were killed in the fighting that started a day earlier. The rebels later withdrew from the base.

Rebels appear to be trying to take over air bases and destroy aircraft in order to prevent the regime from using them in attacks against opposition forces around the country.

The rebels have no protection against the attack helicopters and fighter jets that have been blasting their positions.

Rebels have been attacking air bases in different parts of Syria, mostly in the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo.

In the battle at the base outside Damascus, Abdul-Rahman and Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said rebels destroyed two helicopters with rocket propelled grenades and captured a tank. They say the base, which is on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, houses several radar positions.

"This is a blow to the morale of the regime, because it is close to the heart of the capital," said Abdul-Rahman, referring to the base that is about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from Damascus.

Al-Shami said the rebels withdrew from the base after they captured some ammunition. He said they feared counterstrikes by regime aircraft.

An amateur video posted online showed rebels walking next to two destroyed helicopters. At least three other helicopters appeared undamaged. Black smoke billowed in the distance.

Another video showed several radar posts on hills inside the large compound. Parked military trucks stood inside as rebels roamed freely.

The activist videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting about the events depicted. Syria restricts the access of reporters.

The Observatory also reported violence in other parts of Syria, including the country's largest city of Aleppo in the north and the capital itself.

It said rebels on Sunday captured a training base for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command near the Damascus suburb of Douma. The PFLP-GC is one of the Palestinian factions most loyal to Assad.

The PFLP-GC said in a statement late Saturday that the base was under attack. It said that thousands of activists and fighters who fought against Israel were trained at the base over the past 30 years.

Also Sunday, the Observatory said a bomb targeted a bus in the southern village of Othman, killing at least five people and wounding dozens. It said rebels and troops clashed in the southern region of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said residents found 12 bodies in the Damascus suburb of Daraya, scene of heavy clashes between rebels and government troops over the past few days.

State TV said troops clashed with al-Qaida militants in Daraya, killing some of them and confiscating a mortar that they were using in their attacks.

The station said that troops killed an al-Qaida affiliated Palestinian militant known as Abu Suhaib in the Damascus suburb of Hajira. It said his group was behind several bombings in Syria that killed and wounded dozens of people.

Assad's regime blames the revolt on a foreign conspiracy. It accuses Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the United States, other Western countries and Turkey, of funding, training and arming the rebels, whom it calls terrorists.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

World stocks muted ahead of meeting on Greece

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose modestly Monday after the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season in the U.S. topped expectations. But trading in Europe was subdued hours before finance ministers gathered yet again to discuss what to do about Greece.

The ministers of the 17 countries that use the euro are scheduled to meet in Brussels to try to reach an agreement on conditions that Greece must meet before the next installment of its emergency bailout loan can be disbursed. Athens faces bankruptcy without the cash.

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.1 percent to 5,812.32. Germany's DAX was 0.1 percent down at 7,301.64. France's CAC-40 lost 0.3 percent to 3,519.75.

Wall Street, gearing up for its first full day of trading since last Wednesday, was set to fall. Dow Jones industrial futures lost 0.2 percent at 12,937 and S&P 500 futures shed 0.3 percent to 1,401.50. U.S. stocks rose on Friday after a half-day of trading.

Stocks in Asia fared better, posting some modest gains after what appeared to be a successful start to the traditional pre-Christmas U.S. shopping season.

Americans visited stores and websites in record numbers last Friday, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday that is dubbed "Black Friday" because U.S. retailers traditionally turn a profit as millions of Americans rush out to stores in search of gifts for Christmas and other celebrations.

Surveys showed a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites between Thursday and Sunday, up 9.2 percent from the year before.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.2 percent to 9,388.94 while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.3 percent to 4,424.20. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, India and the Philippines also rose.

But South Korea's Kospi shed 0.2 percent to 1,908.15. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was sapped of momentum by lethargic mainland Chinese markets. The index lost 0.3 percent to 21,857.77. The Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.5 percent to 2,017.46. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 1.4 percent to 789.49.

Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong, said traders were shying away from mainland stock markets due to the failure of Chinese authorities to remove companies that fail to earn profits after three years.

A regulation exists to allow for a delisting after three years, but it is not enforced, Lun said.

"If you cannot weed out the losers, the stock market will be inundated with companies not doing anything," he said. "The listed companies are out to grab money instead of earning a profit for shareholders."

Among individual stocks, Japanese vehicle makers posted solid gains. Toyota Motor Corp. rose 1.7 percent. Nissan Motor Co. added 2.3 percent. Yamaha Motor Co. gained 2.1 percent.

Australia's Sydney Airport rose 1.5 percent after announcing it has secured about $1.1 billion in new funds to repay existing debts and fund future spending.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was down 9 cents to $88.18 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 90 cents to finish at $88.28 per barrel on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2957 from $1.2971 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 82.01 yen from 82.40 yen. Earlier Monday, the dollar rose to 82.59 yen.

Ethics panel investigating New York Republican

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House Ethics Committee announced Monday that Rep. Michael Grimm, a former FBI agent, is under investigation for possible campaign finance violations, but said it is deferring the inquiry because of a separate Justice Department probe.

The New York Republican may have violated campaign finance laws by soliciting and accepting prohibited contributions, actions that may have caused false information to be included in campaign finance reports, the committee said.

One focus of the investigation is whether the congressman improperly sought assistance from a foreign national, by soliciting contributions in exchange for offering to use his official position to assist the person in obtaining a green card, according to a committee statement.

William McGinley, Grimm's lawyer, said, "Today's announcement by the House Ethics Committee comes as no surprise. We appreciate the committee's decision to defer consideration of this matter while we continue to work with the Department of Justice to favorably resolve the false allegations against Congressman Grimm.

"Any fair and objective review of all of the facts in this matter will conclude that Congressman Grimm engaged in no wrongdoing. We are confident that the Department of Justice and the Ethics Committee will reach that result."

The independent House Office of Congressional Ethics had recommended dismissal of the case because it could not establish with sufficient certainty that a violation occurred after Grimm became a congressman.

However, ethics committee Chairman Jo Bonner, R-Ala., and ranking Democrat Linda Sanchez of California said the panel previously has investigated conduct that occurred during an initial campaign for the House. The Office of Congressional Ethics is run by a board that does not include members of Congress, but can only make recommendations to the ethics committee ? which has five members from each party.

"Based on this precedent, notwithstanding OCE's view...the committee unanimously voted to continue to assert jurisdiction over matters relating to a successful campaign for election to the House of Representatives," the Bonner-Sanchez statement said.

The committee said the Justice Department sought the delay in the House effort ? as it often does ? when conducting a parallel investigation. Following precedent, the ethics panel voted to place its investigation on hold.

Grimm, whose district covers Brooklyn and Staten Island, was first elected in 2010 with 51 percent of the vote. He was re-elected this year with 53 percent.

It has been previously reported that the FBI was probing money donated to Grimm's 2010 campaign by followers of an Israeli rabbi. Agents last summer arrested an Israeli businessman with links to the adult entertainment industry who had helped Grimm raise hundreds of thousands of dollars from the rabbi's followers in New York.

Some donors have said they broke campaign finance law by donating more money than allowed, or by funneling donations from foreigners who aren't legally allowed to give to U.S. candidates.

Grimm repeatedly has denied knowledge of any improper donations or any other illegal activity.

95% Argo

All Critics (239) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (228) | Rotten (11)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

The shaggy and bearded Ben Affleck, barely recognisable from his former self, gives a great lead performance. Understated, intense and steely-eyed, Affleck has the screen presence of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood.

Affleck the director is utterly sure-footed with an instinctive feel for characterization, tension and pacing as he builds the action towards a nail-biting climax.

A dum-tight thriller demonstrating that Affleck is one of the most accomplished directors working in Hollywood today.

[A] gripping, beautifully performed and often very funny but dramatic thriller.

[Affleck] once again proves, as he did in The Town, that he's a pretty good actor but a great director.

Nailing the tension, the terror and the gallows humour of its story without resorting to jingoism or losing sight of its political context, Argo is a close-to-flawless thriller with a devilishly smart mouth.

Better to watch it as a meta cinema commentary than a historical thriller. Either way, Argo is both smart and fun but ultimately lightweight. Star Wars fans may well cry before the credits roll.

Aurora

Image

The jewel of the Kingdom, located just thirty miles upriver and surrounded by the River Danu on one side and Moin, Aurora has great white walls and gleaming towers with the outer wall enclosing the farmland just outside the city. A trade center and formidable fortress, this city has never fallen to an attacker. It is rumored to be impossible to take by force of arms. It is here the nobility gather for a Witan to elect a new king or queen.

Aurora is a center of trade and learning as well as political and economical power. The Auroran Cathedral is here as is the dwelling place of the Grand Cleric . Towering far above the city is the Palace of the King where the King or Queen holds court and where nobles tend to congregate and stay at while they are in the capital. It boasts a large army and a dock along both rivers for ships traveling inland and out to sea.

5 Critical Content Marketing Mistakes That You Must Avoid | Social ...

Content marketing i.e. creating and distributing content is one of the most effective ways to promote a business online. Businesses and marketers all over the world are using content to attract new customers. However, creating quality content regularly, takes valuable time and resources. It is thus important to do it correctly and get the most out of your efforts.

Content Marketing Mistakes

?

In this article we take a look at five common content marketing mistakes that should not be left unchecked. If you want your business to benefit from content marketing, you will need to avoid these mistakes.

1. Writing For The Wrong Audience

When I first started blogging a few years ago, my content was aimed more at marketers, designers and SEO specialists as opposed to businesses. Although my content performed well and I was building a good following, I finally came to a realisation that I was not targeting the right audience.

One of the main purposes of starting a blog for me was to generate leads and sales from my Web design and Internet marketing business. It thus made sense to target businesses instead of other professionals in my niche. Finally, I had to shift focus to address businesses instead of other designers and marketers. I still write about the same topics, but I use less jargon and have had to adjust my tone to address businesses instead. It took me two years to realise this. You can learn from my experience and define your audience right from the start.

2. Poorly Crafted Headlines

Compelling headlines or titles are vital to the success of your content whether it is a blog post, an eBook or a report. Compelling headlines play a major role in determining the popularity and readership of your content.

Content Marketing Mistakes- Poor Headline

A great headline should:

  • Grab the attention of Readers
  • Generate interest and compel users to read the rest of your content
  • Should be clear and concise and easy to understand
  • Should include keywords

You can take advantage of list posts or instructional content as they are very popular among readers and tend to be share more on social media.

Lets take a simple example.? The same headline ?methods to improve the usability of your website can be better written as ?10 Easy Ways to Improve The Usability of Your Website? which is more compelling and will grab the attention of readers.

3. Focusing On Quantity Over Quality

It is often suggested that a business or web master should publish content every day in order to get more coverage and reach. Publishing daily does have its benefits, particular on blogs. It can improve your search engine rank and drive more visitors towards your website. However it should never be at the cost of quality. Publishing quality content once a week can be equally effective for meeting your marketing objectives.

4. Not Optimising Your Content? Search Engine Optimisation

Optimising your content properly is essential to get the desired results. Both, external SEO factors such as link building and on-page optimisation are important. The importance of good on-page optimisation should not be under-estimated. Good optimisation is a must for all content produced as part of your marketing efforts. It should not be overlooked whether you are creating a blog post, press release or an article.

Content Marketing Mistake - No SEO

Source: SEOMoz. Org

Here are some SEO tips you can use:

  • Choose the right keywords:
  • Use Keywords in Headline
  • Use Keywords in Meta title and description
  • Use keywords in headings and bold text
  • Optimise Image ALT descriptions
  • Use in URL e.g. www.yoursitename.com/keywordphrase.html

5. Syndicating The Same Content Everywhere

It is common for businesses and marketers to distribute content on several sources in order to maximise their reach. For example, a business may post content on its blog, publish articles on article sites, create eBooks and as well as publish documents on document sharing sites. Some businesses make the mistake of publishing the same identical content on several sources. ?Although targeting multiple channels can be very effective, syndicating the exact same content everywhere should be avoided.

(AP) ? The children of a Houston-area couple killed during Thursday's massive highway wreck in Texas say this was the family's first Thanksgiving apart.

V.J. and Richard Leggio tell KHOU-TV that their parents ? 64-year-old Vincent Leggio and 60-year-old Debbie Leggio of Pearland ? were driving east on Interstate 10 to Louisiana for a gambling trip.

V.J., who worked with his father at the family business, says the family is devastated.

The couple was killed in a chain-reaction crash during heavy fog along Interstate 10 that involved more than 100 vehicles, many left twisted on top of each other.

At least 80 people were injured. Twelve were in serious condition Thursday night. Phone messages left Friday for law enforcement officials weren't returned.

The wreck occurred southwest of Beaumont, on Texas' Gulf Coast.
