Darren Sammy rubbishes Gayle?s injury reports ? Cricket News Update

West Indies skipper Darren Sammy on Saturday rubbished the news of Chris Gayle?s injury, and hoped for the talismanic opener to continue leading the Caribbean contingent from the front, come the ICC World T20 final against hosts?Sri Lanka on Sunday.

In the second semi-final against Australia, on Friday, the 33-year-old Jamaican left-hander rose to the challenge smashing a 41-ball unbeaten 75, to help the Caribbean side post an intimidating 205 for four, the highest total of the tournament so far.

The tourists will be hoping for Gayle to emulate the stupendous performance against Sri Lanka on Sunday, in what will be their first World T20 final appearance in the history. However, there are reports that the left-hander is not hundred per cent fit.

The West Indies skipper rubbished the reports on the eve of the grand finale, and hoped for the hard-hitting Jamaican top-order batsman to give them a good start against Jayawardene?s men on Sunday.

?The physio didn't tell me anything very serious, so it seems to be okay,? said Sammy at the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

?I know nobody is going to make Chris miss the final. He's played through pain for us many times before and tomorrow won't be any different. He gives us a good start at the top,? the St Lucia all-rounder added further.

Chris Gayle?s belligerence with the bat has been the key behind West Indies? move to the ICC World T20 final. The left-handed Jamaican opener has so far scored 219 runs from five innings, at an impressive average of 54.75, and is the leading West Indian run getter in the tournament, second only to Australia?s Shane Watson (249). Gayle?s tally of runs includes three whirlwind half-centuries as well.

It is pertinent to mention here that Gayle?s only off day in the tournament so far had come against the Lankans, when the West Indies opener was caught behind the stumps by Kumar Sangakkara off Nuwan Kulasekara on 2. The tourists were soundly beaten by Jayawardene and Co. by nine wicket in that match.

?In any team, once he (Gayle) is going, it's good for the team. We have the resources in the batting line-up to click if Gayle doesn't give us that start tomorrow.?

?Tomorrow is about every single person doing what it takes to get the team over the line,? the visiting skipper insisted.
