Cap ?n? clown: Salford University launches degree in comedy

A university has a launched a degree for students who will be encouraged to joke around in lectures.

The three-year BA in comedy practices at Salford University?s MediaCity campus is one of the first in the country dedicated to the art of making people laugh.

Those who pass will hope to follow in the footsteps of the university?s top comic graduates Peter Kay and Jason Manford.

Students are taught how to perform their own comedy material, learn drama techniques and write sitcom scripts.

Course leader Lisa Moore said: "Salford has got quite a strong history of funny people.

"People who have taken our performing arts course have gone on to be very successful, and we thought there was a demand for a comedy course.

"We have got 20 students on the course this year, and we are hoping to build on this.

"It?s a full-time degree. I would say the majority of students are very keen to break onto the circuit and perform, but it can open the door to lots of other careers in TV and performance."

The ?8,500-a-year course is a spin-off from Salford?s performance degree, whose alumni include Phoenix Nights star Kay and top stand-up Manford.

Other showbiz stars to study at Salford include Oscar-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley, former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston and leading actress Maxine Peake.

Lisa, a veteran TV?and stage performer, stand-up poet and actor, said professional comics, actors and writers would be running hands-on classes.

She said: "We?re very lucky in Salford to have access to high-profile TV and film companies, particularly since MediaCity opened. Our students will be able to make the most of these opportunities. We?ve got some amazing people who will be running masterclasses with them."

The course promises to teach ?cutting-edge live and recorded performance? and tell students ?about the business and acquire production skills?.

Graduates ?may go on to perform, direct, write, research or produce?.

Sharing housework may not save a marriage, study finds

Getty Images stock

This is nice, but it may not save your relationship.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

A new study is challenging the conventional wisdom that sharing household duties such as scrubbing the kitchen and toilets will reduce your odds of divorce.

But, the researchers caution, the findings are not an excuse for men or women to start shirking their chores.

Researchers used 2007-08 data on thousands of Norwegian adults to determine possible links between marriage, housework and happiness.

They found that divorce rates were actually higher for the approximately 25 percent of couples who shared housework equally than for the 71 percent couples where women did more or all of the housework.

Divorce rates also were significantly higher among the 4 percent of households in which the men did the majority of the housework, although the sample size was quite small for that group.

?The main point is that there is little to indicate that gender equality at home protects against divorce, as many people think and as is typically maintained by scholars in the field,? Thomas Hansen, a researcher with a Norwegian social research institute and one of the co-authors of the study, told TODAY in an e-mail.

Still, Hansen cautions that spouses should not take this as a sign they can throw in the dish towel ? or vacuum, dust pan and sponge.

?This should not be interpreted as a causal effect, i.e., that (equality) leads to divorce,? he wrote.

Instead, it could be an indication that the type of modern couple that shares housework equally might also have more modern views on marriage and divorce. In addition, women in those households may have more financial independence to get out of an unhappy marriage.

The full study is available here. If you don?t happen to read Norwegian, skip to page 223 for the English-language summary.

Israelis are prepared ? and not ? for an Iran attack

Bernat Armangue / AP

By Martin Fletcher, NBC News correspondent

TEL AVIV ? Did you know:

  • If a bomb explodes near you with a little bang, that's a sign it is carrying chemical or biological weapons? A loud bang means a conventional warhead.
  • If an attack is chemical, you will know right away? But if it's biological you'll only find out after a few days.
  • If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave.

Useful, eh?

All these facts are good to know if you are in Israel and war with Iran, and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, were to break out around you.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

Or if something happened with Syria, Iran's ally, which has large stockpiles of biological and conventional weapons.

With the latest opinion polls showing that half of Israelis fear for the continued existence of their state if war breaks out with Iran, and with more than half rating the chance of such a war within a year as "medium" or "high,? the more you know about what the war would entail, the better.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Here are some more facts:

  • If you suck a bead made of castor oil, it could kill you. It contains ricin, a lethal poison.
  • After Chernobyl, it took 25 years before Welsh sheep could be eaten because the nuclear radiation settled over Wales as it drifted most of the way round the world.
  • And cigarettes contain polonium 210, the poison used to murder the Soviet ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Probably no country in the world is as prepared as Israel for such an attack, with every home built in the last 21 years possessing a mandatory bomb shelter. City centers have vast public shelters with special rooms set up for non-conventional attacks. And citizens are instructed in how to protect their bomb shelters against chemical and biological warfare.

Mistakes happen
But mistakes can happen, as I can personally attest.?

One evening in the winter of 1991 during the first Gulf War, with Iraqi Scud missiles rocketing over Jordan toward Israel, the bomb alarm sounded. My family quickly locked themselves in our bomb shelter, and I raced through the dark, silent streets to broadcast from our NBC News studio.

Israel's Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons

This had become routine. I spent all night in the studio, responding to the many alarms, and went home around 5a.m. I didn't check on the family because I knew where the Scuds had fallen and none were near my home.

This one time, however, with 30 minutes to go before my next live broadcast hit, I had a sense that something was wrong. For the first time after an attack, I called home to see how my wife and my three sons, all aged below six, were faring.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the UN general assembly Thursday that sanctions are not stopping Iran's nuclear program.

No answer. I called again. No answer. Twenty-five minutes to go before my next ?live hit? on TV with Tom Brokaw. I felt sick with worry. What could have happened?

I ran downstairs, jumped into my car and raced home. I figured a 10-minute drive, five minutes at home and 10 minutes back, I'd be in the studio with seconds to spare.

Life-saving decision
Ends up, because of that calculation, I saved my family's lives.

When the all-clear sounded, my wife, our three sons, my sister-in-law and the dog, a schnauzer called Tofi, couldn't get out of the shelter.

The heavy steel lock would not budge. They hung on it and pulled and tried and tried but could not open the door. When I arrived home, about two hours after they had entered the bomb shelter, I heard faint cries of "help, help."

Instead of pushing the handle up, they had been pulling it down, locking it instead of opening it.

I was able to open the door from the outside and all was well.

But if I had stuck to my usual routine and not called home and just returned at 5 a.m., after leaving them at 8 p.m. the night before, they would have been dead.

It's simple math: An adult breathes about one cubic meter of air per hour, children more. Five people in a small room of about nine cubic meters would begin to lose air after two hours. Seven hours? They'd have all been dead.

A miracle? Sixth sense? Whatever, it's a warning of what can go wrong in times of stress. And however prepared Israelis are for what awaits them, accidents happen. When Iraq attacked Israel in 1991, far more people died of heart attacks than Scud rockets.

Country on edge
Since that time, every apartment built in Israel must have a blast-proof room that protects citizens from conventional blasts and also, with plastic and tape, can protect against chemical and biological weapons too. Walls and doors are approximately 8-12 inches thick and doors and windows are airtight.

Every citizen has, in theory, a gas mask. In practice, there aren't enough to go around.

Everybody asks, do you think there will be war with Iran? Nobody knows, and if you see Israel?s crowded cafes, the bustling streets, the crammed beaches, you may think that nobody cares.

Yet Israel is a country on edge. Most seem to have bought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s line that the price to pay to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb is much lower than the price to be paid if Iran has the bomb.

Fueling those thoughts are memories of what happened when the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Today, there are approximately 6 million Jews in Israel. Few Israelis can argue against Netanyahu's insistence of: Never again.

And yet, I don't know anyone here who has prepared their bomb shelter. They're all a mess, used to store boxes, suitcases, footballs and wine. They are used as computer rooms, bicycle storage, play rooms. The attitude is, for the most part, we'll worry about it when the time comes.

Until then, live life.

A Stiff Bendy Cable Keeps This Power Bar Exactly Where You Put It [Power]

If you ever try to use a power bar anywhere but on the floor, you'll quickly realize that gravity will do everything it can to drag it off a table, a ladder, or anything not at ground level. That's not the case with Quirky's new Prop Power extension cord, though. Its six-foot cable is made with flexible wiring and a conforming plastic sleeve, so it holds its shape. More »

Rental car companies pledge not to rent recalled cars

The nation's four largest rental car companies have banded together in a pledge not to rent out any vehicles that are subject to a manufacturer safety recall and to support legislation that would legally enforce the promise.

Enterprise/National/Alamo, Hertz/Advantage, Avis/Budget joined Hertz in the agreement pushed by Sen. Charles Schumer (D.-N.Y.), Sen. Barbara Boxer (D.-California) and by Cally Houck, a California mother whose daughters died in the crash of a rental car that was under recall.

Houck's two daughters, Raechel and Jacqueline, were killed in 2004 after the PT Cruiser they had rented from Enterprise apparently began leaking steering fluid and suddenly caught fire before crashing into an oncoming semi-tractor trailer. As reported in a 2010 ABC News investigation, the car had been under a safety recall for the potential fire hazard and, after a lengthy legal battle, Enterprise had to pay the Houck family $15 million in damages.

WATCH ABC News Investigates: Deadly Rental Cars on the Road

Under current law, car dealerships are banned from selling vehicles that are under a safety recall, but the restriction does not prevent rental agencies from renting out recalled cars. New legislation sponsored by Boxer and Schumer, called the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act of 2012, aims to close that loophole.

"If this bill had been the law, and the rental companies complied, my beautiful, precious daughters would still be alive," Cally Houck said today. "My abiding hope is that it will be enacted, and other families will be spared our devastating loss."

After the 2010 ABC News report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation to see how quickly rental car companies repair vehicles that have been recalled.

With the exception of Hertz, all the major American rental car companies declined to sign a pledge this summer saying they wouldn't rent cars under recall. At the time, they said that while they supported safe rental car legislation, they wanted it to extend to other businesses that transport passengers in vehicles, like limousine and taxi companies. All the companies said then that they address safety recalls in a timely manner and representatives for Enterprise and Avis said their policy was already not to rent cars that were under recall.

But their recent decision to sign the pledge -- along with the newfound support of several safety auto agencies -- is a "breakthrough years in the making," according to Sen. Schumer.

"Consumers will no longer have to worry about what they aren't being told when they go to the rental car counter," he said. "With the industry's full backing, we think we have a great shot to get this legislation passed before the end of the year."

Netanyahu?s ?red line? mocked on Twitter

Netanyahu shows an illustration during his speech at the U.N. on Sept. 27, 2012. (Keith Bedford/Reuters)

During his speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the completion of Iran's nuclear enrichment program threatens the stability of the Middle East, Europe and the United States?and urged world leaders to draw a "red line" to prevent Iran from continuing on.

In a highly unusual move, Netanyahu wielded a prop to illustrate his point: He literally drew a red line across a poster that showed a cartoon of a bomb.

"Iran is 70 percent of the way there and ... well into the second stage," Netanyahu said while displaying the chart. "By next summer, at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and moved on to the final stage. From there it is only a few more weeks before they have enriched enough for a bomb.

"Each day, that point is getting closer," he warned.

As you might expect, a few Twitter users mocked the display.

"Okay, it's official," The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg wrote. "Netanyahu has no idea what he's doing. He has just turned a serious issue into a joke."

Goldberg continued: "Netanyahu's bomb cartoon is the Middle East equivalent of Clint Eastwood's chair."

"Apparently Netanyahu took a chart-making course from Paul Ryan," the comedian Rob Delaney tweeted.

"I didn't realize nuclear bombs looked like the bombs from Super Mario," Buzzfeed's Andrew Kaczynski quipped.

"Netanyahu has reduced nuclear war diplomacy to cartoons and markers," Sam Stein tweeted.

Many Twitter users questioned the wisdom of bringing clip art to the U.N., while some referenced a Roadrunner comparison.

"Excuse me, Prime Minister Netanyahu?" Rex Huppke wrote. "Wile E. Coyote called. He wants his bomb back."

"From what I can tell," ? @AGFlores tweeted, "Iran is seeking 1950's cartoon bombs made by Acme."

"Internets: Quick!" Jodi Williams wrote on Twitter. "We need a photo mashup of the StringRay photobomb and #Netanyahu's bomb chart."

Most European languages in danger of digital extinction, study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? More than 20 European languages face digital extinction because of a lack of technological support, a study by Europe's leading language technology experts has found.

Scientists from The University of Manchester were part of a European team of researchers who concluded that digital assistance for 21 of the 30 languages investigated is 'non-existent' or 'weak' at best.

The report coincides with the European Day of Languages (http://edl.ecml.at/) on Sept. 26, a day which recognises the importance of fostering and developing the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of the continent.

Languages spoken by a small number of people could be at risk because they do not have technological support, the report by META-NET, a European network of excellence that consists of 60 research centres in 34 countries, including the University of Manchester's National Centre for Text Mining (NaCTeM), found.

Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Maltese are at the highest risk of disappearing, while other languages such as Bulgarian, Greek, Hungarian and Polish are also at risk. The researchers claim that 21 out of 30 European languages could become extinct in the digital world.

The study, prepared by more than 200 experts and documented in 30 volumes of the META-NET White Paper Series, assessed language technology support for each language in four different areas: automatic translation, speech interaction, text analysis and the availability of language resources.

Several languages, for example Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Maltese, receive this lowest score in all four areas.

While English has the best language technology support amongst all European languages, it can still not be considered as "excellent support," but rather only "good support," the University of Manchester researchers found in the White Paper for English.

Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish are considered to have "moderate support." Languages such as Basque, Bulgarian, Catalan, Greek, Hungarian and Polish exhibit "fragmentary support," which also places them in the set of high-risk languages.

Language technology software is used to process spoken or written human language. Well-known examples include spelling and grammar checkers, interactive personal assistants on smartphones (such as Siri on the iPhone), dialogue systems that work over the phone, automatic translation systems and web search engines.

The lack of available software for the high-risk languages means that without drastic action, they will be unable to survive in today's digital world.

Language technology systems primarily rely on statistical methods that require incredibly large amounts of written or spoken data -- difficult to acquire for languages with relatively few speakers.

Furthermore, statistical language technology systems have inherent limits on their quality, as can be seen, for example, in the often amusing incorrect translations produced by online machine translation systems.

The report concludes that a coordinated, large-scale effort has to be made in Europe to create the missing technologies and transfer this technology to the languages faced with digital extinction .

Professor Sophia Ananiadou, director of NaCTeM, said: "In the UK, most of us use software that incorporates language technology without even realising it.

"Language technology already makes our lives easier and has huge potential to help us in many different ways. As digital information and communication is becoming increasingly dominant, it is vital that sophisticated language technology support is available for a wider range of languages, otherwise collaboration with our European neighbours will become more difficult."

Professor Hans Uszkoreit, coordinator of META-NET, said: "The results of our study are most alarming. The majority of European languages are severely under-resourced and some are almost completely neglected. In this sense, many of our languages are not yet future-proof.

U.S., Gulf countries agree to strengthen trade ties

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday said it has signed a framework agreement with Saudi Arabia and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council to explore ways to boost trade and investment with the oil-rich region.

The GCC also includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Total two-way trade between the United States and the GCC totaled almost $100 billion last year, with the U.S. running about a $24 billion trade deficit.

"This important trade and investment agreement will help to grow and strengthen our economic ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council, which is a key strategic U.S. partner in the Middle East and North Africa region," U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said in a statement.

U.S. goods exports to the GCC totaled nearly $38 billion in 2011, led by vehicles, machinery, aircraft, electrical machinery, and optical and medical instruments.

The United States imported nearly $62 billion of oil, aluminum, fertilizers, organic chemicals and other goods from the region last year.

U.S. foreign direct investment in GCC countries was $23.5 billion in 2010, USTR said.

The United States already has free trade agreements with Oman and Bahrain and individual trade and investment framework agreements with the four other GCC members.

The new regional forum will complement the existing bilateral pacts, USTR said.

Exercise does a body -- and a mind -- good

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? We've heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it's not just good for physical health -- research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?

A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.

Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity -- such as social relationships and mutual support among team members -- that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.

Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.

The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.

Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.

These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors -- body image and social interaction -- may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.

"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.

Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

Knowledge of marketing, housing essential to Real Estate business ...

Terri Hunter

By Kyle Siegel
Staff writer

Terri Hunter is a busy woman. Many around the Sedalia area may know her as a successful real estate agent with Re-Max of Sedalia, but many do not realize that she has several time consuming activities that she is just as passionate about.

Hunter was born at the U.S. Marine Corps bas Camp Pendleton, California.

?I was only there until I was two. My dad was a Marine and we moved around every three to five years,? Hunter said.

She added, ?From there my dad transferred to Memphis, Tennessee. I went to school for a year in Memphis,? Hunter said.

Like most military kids Hunter and family relocated again, this time to Beaufort, South Carolina.

?From there we moved to Sedalia for a year while my dad went to Okinawa. From there we went to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and then my dad retired from the Marine Corps in May of 81. Then we moved here,? Hunter explained.

Hunter ended staying in the Sedalia area and she graduated from Smith-Cotton before moving on to State Fair Community College, where she received an A.A.S. in Accounting.

Hunter was asked if she had a chance to play any sports while moving around so frequently.

?In North Carolina I was the only girl on the baseball team. They didn?t have cheerleaders so I tried to join the football team. They decided to make a cheer leading squad,? Hunter said.

Hunter was asked if she got involved in real estate early on in her work career, or if that was something that came later.

?In real estate I would have liked to have gotten into that earlier, but I thought you had to know a lot of people.

?You really just need to know the marketing and housing,? Hunter explained.

She added, ?I was the office administrator for Re-Max for almost three years. Just seeing the different people that do real estate, I thought I could do that.?

Hunter has been a real estate agent with Re-Max for five years now, and when she first started as an agent in January of 2008 the housing market was in the beginning of its downturn.

?It was a tough year, but it taught me not to get bad habits. You can?t just wait for people to walk in. You have to do the work,? she said.

When asked if she still enjoys the real estate business as much as she did when she started, Hunter replied, ?I do. As a matter of fact I am taking classes for my broker?s license. It is a roller coaster. No two closings are the same.

Not only does she sell real estate, but Terri also trains people for the West Central Association of Realtors.

?I am on the Education and New Member Orientation Board. I train all of the new members that come into the association. I have done that now for three years.

Hunter, ever the busy woman, has also served as the treasurer of the Sedalia Lions Club for nearly two years, and she is also the treasurer for the Sedalia Landlord Association.

Terri and her husband Donnie have two children, both girls. Her daughter Holly is going to college to complete her master?s degree in Speech Pathology. Her daughter Heather is following the footsteps of her mother and taking real estate classes.

Terri and Donnie are also involved in owning and managing properties.

?We have been doing rental houses since 1992. We are just buying more in the last three to five years. It is not too bad. You just want to make sure you have quality properties and maintain good upkeep on them,? Hunter explained.

When asked what she does for fun in her downtime, Hunter gave a surprising answer.

?I have a small hobby farm. It is 40 acres. We have cows. We used to do pigs and chickens, but we don?t have time for that anymore.

?It is very stress relieving. Most of the time the cows don?t talk back. They are always glad to see you,? Hunter said with a smile.

With what little time she has left over in a week, Terri finds time to do a radio show twice a week on BobFM and KIX Country 105.7.

She airs live on Thursday mornings at 8:50 in the a.m. She also airs every other Friday on BobFM. She then pre-records with Becca on Kix Country.

?I always do statistics; Pettis County residential listings, how many are pending and how many are sold each week.?

Why Personal Bankruptcy Is The Best Choice For Some | Siben ...

TIP! Two to three months following your bankruptcy hearing, get a copy of your credit score from the major reporting agencies. Check to make sure your credit report accurately reflects your recently discharged debts.

Filing for bankruptcy is never a day in the park. If you are contemplating filing for bankruptcy, it means that you are in a dire financial situation. With the solid advice in the article below, you may be able to make a better choice.

TIP! When you speak with a bankruptcy attorney, it is important that you tell him everyone that you owe significant amounts of money too. While this means you have to disclose information about credit card companies, hospitals and lenders, it also means you should tell him about any money that you owe family and friends.

When you realize that you probably will file for bankruptcy, do not pay your creditors or try to avoid bankruptcy by spending all of your regular or retirement savings. You should always keep money saved for worse times. Using your savings is necessary, but decimating it and leaving yourself dangling with no future financial security is not a good idea.

TIP! Try to get a referral from a trusted source before choosing an attorney to handle your bankruptcy and make sure they have no issues with the state bar or the better business bureau. This type of law is a popular attraction for inexperienced newcomers.

Be sure the lawyer that you choose is very experienced in bankruptcy law. There are a lot of lawyers available to help you. Although hiring the least expensive attorney is tempting, make sure that experience trumps price.

TIP! Filing for bankruptcy is an option that can put an end to harassing creditors calling you at your work and home. When your debts become overwhelming, it is easy to let stress take a hold of you.

Stay in the loop during the bankruptcy process rather than just leaving everything to your lawyer. You need to know what?s going on so don?t be afraid to ask them questions. It is entirely possible for mistakes to be made by personnel in busy offices of law. No matter what you hear, lawyers are just as human as you.

TIP! Do not abandon hope. There may still be way to get repossessed items back after you file for bankruptcy.

Once you file for bankruptcy you need to be extremely careful about any debt you incur. Many lenders will offer loans and credit cards, that are supposedly geared towards people who are making a fresh start after bankruptcy. Usually these loans and credit card offers come with high interest rates. If you are not able to control yourself, you will end up back at square one.

TIP! Before filing for bankruptcy, look into which debts it will clear in your situation. Certain debts, including student loans, may remain with you regardless of your bankruptcy filing.

Before declaring bankruptcy, be sure you?ve weighed other options. If your debt is relatively low, you may be able to manage it with credit counseling. It is sometimes possible to negotiate smaller payment by yourself. If you do this, make sure you save a written record of debt modifications that are negotiated.

TIP! Think about all your options before pulling the trigger. Talk with a bankruptcy lawyer and ask about alternatives, such as debt consolidation or negotiating with creditors.

Keep in mind that filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy may affect other people than just you, including family members, and in some cases, business associates. When you file a Chapter 7, your debts will be dissolved. Creditors, however, will hold the co-signer liable for the entire balance of the debt.

TIP! Remember to spend some quality time with your loved ones. The process of bankruptcy can prove particularly brutal.

When deciding to file bankruptcy, do not feel ashamed of your situation. A lot of people feel depressed and as if they have failed when they seek bankruptcy. If you have researched all your options and logically came to the conclusion that this works best for you, view it as making a positive step in reclaiming your finances rather than seeing it as a failure.

TIP! Organize your debts into an easy-to-read list. You need to gather every debt you know you have, because this list is the starting point for a bankruptcy filing.

Before you file make sure that you are not doing anything to bring yourself in debt any more. Avoid taking on more debt right before you file for bankruptcy. Judges as well as creditors will consider you current and past history when they?re adjudicating personal bankruptcy. Let them see how you are making positive changes to your personal financial management by demonstrating what you are doing right now.

TIP! Learn all the latest laws before you file bankruptcy. The laws change a lot, so you need to look them up and have a better idea of how to properly approach the bankruptcy process.

Try your best to keep a good credit record. Only file for personal bankruptcy if there is no other option. Often companies will reach a settlement that is greatly reduced. Other times, they will help you find a repayment plan that you can manage. Not only will you end up saving money, but your credit rating won?t take such a hard knock. Prior to filing, you should consider obtaining a loan for consolidating your debt.

TIP! Know the laws and guidelines about bankruptcy before you formally file. The bankruptcy code contains several provisions that can raise serious obstacles in your case.

Bankruptcy is something you file for after considering all your other options. The tips from this article can now guide you on the right path to avoid bankruptcy. Apply what you?ve learned here to make changes in your life that will not hurt your credit

Imelda Marcos' vast shoe collection ruined

Termites, storms and neglect have damaged part of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos' legendary stash of shoes and other vanity possessions, left behind after she and her dictator husband were driven into U.S. exile by a 1986 popular revolt.

Hundreds of pieces of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos' clothing, including the formal native see-through Barong shirts he wore during his two-decade rule, have also begun to gather mold and fray after being stored for years without protection at the presidential palace and later at Manila's National Museum, officials told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The Marcoses fled the Philippines at the climax of the army-backed "people power" revolt, which became a harbinger of change in authoritarian regimes worldwide. Ferdinand Marcos died in exile in Hawaii in 1989 and his widow and children returned home years later.

They left behind staggering amounts of personal belongings, clothes and art objects at the palace, including at least 1,220 pairs of Imelda Marcos' shoes.

More than 150 carton boxes of clothes, dress accessories and shoes of the Marcoses were transferred to the National Museum for safekeeping two years ago after termites, humidity and mold threatened the apparel at the riverside palace. There they deteriorated further as the fragile boxes were abandoned in a padlocked museum hall that had no facilities to protect such relics and that was inundated by tropical storm rains last month due to a gushing leak in the ceiling, museum officials said.

7.6-magnitude earthquake strikes off Philippines

Museum staffers, who were not aware the boxes contained precious mementoes from the Marcoses, opened the hall on the fourth floor of the building after noticing water pouring out from under the door. They were shocked to see Marcos' shoes and gowns when they opened the wet boxes, officials said.

Workers hurriedly moved the boxes to a dry room and some were later brought to a museum laboratory, where a small team of curators scrambled to assess the extent of the damage, a process that may take months given the huge volume of the apparel. Some items have obviously been damaged by termites and mold beyond repair, according to museum curator Orlando Abinion, who is heading the effort.

"We're doing a conservation rescue," Abinion told the AP. "There was termite infestation and mold in past years, and these were aggravated by last month's storm."

"It's unfortunate because Imelda may have worn some of these clothes in major official events and as such have an important place in our history," he said.

Two AP journalists saw a badly tattered box at the museum with damaged and soiled leather bags and designer shoes of Imelda Marcos' bulging out. Termites damaged the heel and sole of a white Pierre Cardin shoe. Other shoes had been warped out of shape or messed by stains.

About 100 of Ferdinand Marcos' Barong shirts were squeezed tight into another box, some still attached to plastic hangers. A white Barong shirt on top, with the colorful presidential seal emblazoned on its pocket, looked disheveled with reddish stains and a sleeve nearly torn off.

Imelda Marcos, now a member of the House of Representatives, was not immediately available for comment Sunday.

'A little fixing up'? Philippines hides slum behind wall ahead of poverty conference

Her massive shoe collection, including top U.S. and European brands, astounded the world and became a symbol of excess in the Southeast Asian nation, where many still walked barefoot out of abject poverty.

Ferdinand Marcos' successor, democracy icon Corazon Aquino, accused him of stealing billions of dollars during his 20-year rule and ordered many of his assets seized.

The clothes and shoes of the Marcoses were not among the assets allegedly stolen by them and sequestered by the government following the dictator's fall, according to Presidential Commission on Good Government official Maita Gonzaga. The government has so far recovered $2.24 billion worth of cash, bank accounts and prime real estate from the Marcoses and their cronies, she said.

After the 1986 revolt, Aquino had Imelda Marcos' shoes displayed at the presidential palace as a symbol of the former first lady's lavish lifestyle. The shoes were then removed from public view and stored in the palace basement when Aquino stepped down in 1992.

PhotoBlog: Life and death continue amidst the floods in the Philippines

Imelda Marcos claimed many of the shoes were gifts from Filipino shoemakers in suburban Marikina city, the country's shoemaking capital, for endorsing their products. Marikina officials borrowed 800 pairs of her shoes in 2001 for a shoe museum, which has become a tourist spot. Massive flooding, however, damaged dozens of pairs of Marcos' shoes in Marikina in 2009.

About 765 pairs, including famous brands like Gucci, Charles Jourdan, Christian Dior, Ferragamo, Chanel and Prada, survived the Marikina floods. The shoes still look remarkably new due to meticulous museum care, which includes displaying them in airtight and dust-free glass cabinets in an air-conditioned gallery, away from direct sunlight. The shoe collection draws a daily crowd of 50 to 100 Philippine and foreign tourists, who almost always leave in awe, museum manager Jane Ballesteros said.

"The first word they utter is 'Wow,' followed by the question, 'Was she able to wear all of these?'" Ballesteros said. "When I say, yes, look at the scratches on the soles, the next reaction is, 'Really?'"

"It's amusing," Ballesteros said. "Her shoes never fail to astound people years after."

Frustration and turmoil as world leaders meet

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Democratic uprisings across the Arab world and the Palestinians' bid for U.N. membership sparked excitement and hope at last year's meeting of world leaders. But with war raging in Syria, the Palestinian application sidelined, and deadly protests generated by an anti-Islamic video, the mood as this year's U.N. gathering begins is one of disappointment and frustration.

More than 120 presidents, prime ministers and monarchs meeting this week under heavy security at the U.N. General Assembly and in sideline events will also be preoccupied by rising tension over Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of an Israeli strike against Tehran's nuclear facilities, al-Qaida's inroads in the Sahel region of west Africa, especially in Mali, and the first decline in years in international aid to help developing countries combat poverty.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon predicted that the ministerial session, which starts Tuesday, will be among the busiest ever, reflecting "the tumultuous time in which we live ? a time of turmoil and transition." It is also taking place "against a backdrop of widespread violence linked to intolerance," he said.

Ahead of the opening ministerial session, which President Barack Obama will address, the U.N. chief has invited leaders to the first high-level meeting on the rule of law on Monday, hoping they "will send a strong signal to the world's people that they are serious about establishing well-functioning institutions and delivering justice."

Diplomats aren't expecting any breakthroughs on the deadlock over Syria, which Ban said "will be foremost in our minds," despite a number of sideline meetings starting Monday when the new U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi briefs the U.N. Security Council behind closed doors on his recent talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other leaders in the region.

"To increase pressure and to increase the isolation of the regime of Assad is one of the goals of this week," Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told reporters Sunday.

The Syrian conflict has bitterly divided the most powerful members of the Security Council, paralyzing the only U.N. body that can impose global sanctions and authorize military action. Russia, Syria's key protector, and China, have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to stop the violence and start political talks with opponents of his family's 40-year dictatorship who began demonstrating against his regime 18 months ago.

Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig, the current Security Council president, said "change in the Arab world" will be uppermost in the minds of the leaders ? as was the case at last year's session.

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist who was sworn in on June 30 after the first democratic elections in the country's modern history, will be addressing the 193-member assembly for the first time on Wednesday. So too will Yemen's President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who took office in February following more than a year of political turmoil and is now trying to steer the country's transition to democracy.

Last year, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas stole the spotlight with his submission of an application for Palestine to become the 194th member state of the United Nations. The United States, Israel's closest ally, made clear that it would veto any application until the Palestinians and Israelis negotiate an end to their decades-long conflict.

So Abbas is expected to come to the General Assembly on Thursday with a more modest proposal ? to upgrade Palestine's current status as a U.N. observer to a non-member observer state ? but likely putting off the date for submission of a resolution to the assembly, where there are no vetoes, until after the U.S. presidential election in November.

The Palestinians expect overwhelming support from the assembly for the enhanced U.N. status, which they hope will give broad international legitimacy to the pre-1967 lines as Palestine's border and grant them access to U.N. agencies and possibly the International Criminal Court.

With no sign of an end to the Security Council's paralysis over Syria, Wittig said Germany chose to focus the council's ministerial session Wednesday on something new and positive in the Mideast ? "the emergence of the Arab League as a regional actor that has proved to be essential for conflict resolution."

The 21-member Arab League has shaken off decades of near total submission to the will of the region's leaders and is seeking to transform itself following the seismic changes brought about by the Arab Spring. The league has supported the rebels who ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and suspended Syria in response to Assad's brutal crackdown against his opponents.

"This organization is promoting the values that the United Nations is standing for ? human rights, rule of law, democracy, pluralism," the fight against corruption and promoting economic opportunity, Wittig said.

Another issue looming large over the ministerial session is Iran's nuclear program, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convinced that the Iranians are close to developing a nuclear weapon ? which Tehran vehemently denies.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will step down next year, makes his final speech to the General Assembly on Wednesday. Netanyahu speaks on Thursday, before a closed-door meeting of senior diplomats, and possibly ministers, from the six countries trying to rein in Iran's nuclear ambitions ? the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

Secretary-General Ban met Ahmadinejad on Sunday and "urged Iran to take the measures necessary to build international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

The U.N. chief also raised the potentially harmful consequences of inflammatory rhetoric "from various countries in the Middle East" and "the grave regional implications of the worsening situation in Syria and underlined the devastating humanitarian impact," Nesirky said.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, said the U.S.-produced film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad will be at the top of the agenda of a ministerial meeting of its 57 members on the sidelines of the assembly. He said the international community needs to unite behind action to implement international law which warns against any advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, aggression or violence.

There will also be sessions to promote the achievement of U.N. anti-poverty goals by 2015, sustainable energy and an end to polio.
