Intel immerses its servers in oil ? and they like it!

The idea of immersing servers in oil to keep them cool isn?t entirely new ? passionate gamers have been housing their systems in vegetable oil for years.?But it?s time to take notice of this trend when Intel starts singing its praises as a potentially revolutionary method for slashing the price of running a data center.

The microprocessor giant just finished a yearlong test of Green Revolution Cooling?s mineral-oil server-immersion technology and is very happy with the results. According to Mike Patterson, senior power and thermal architect at Intel, not only does the technology appear perfectly safe for server components, but it might also become the norm for anyone needing maximum computer power or building out data center capacity.

Oil immersion, you say?

For the record, Green Revolution Cooling has been in the spotlight for a few years now and has reportedly attracted some big users ? GigaOM?s own Katie Fehrenbacher actually profiled it and its technology in 2010 ? but Intel is the biggest company to publicly come out as one of those customers. In essence, the company?s product, called CarnotJet, houses servers in a specialized coolant oil that absorbs the heat they give off and is then sent to a radiator where it?s cooled before being recycled back into the server housing.

And the technology is incredibly effective. Patterson said that whereas traditional air-cooled server racks often operate at a Power Usage Effectiveness rating of about 1.6 (meaning cooling tacks on a 60 percent increase over the power needed power the servers? computing workloads), Intel?s oil-immersed servers were operating at a PUE between 1.02 and 1.03. It?s possible to achieve similarly low PUE ratings with traditional air- and liquid-cooling methods, Patterson said, but getting there can require some serious engineering effort and cost a lot of money.

As for concerns over the effect of all that oil on the servers? processors, hard drives and other components, Patterson says companies probably shouldn?t sweat it. When its test period ended, Intel sent its servers to its failure-analysis lab, which, he said, ?came back with a thumbs up that a year in the oil bath had no ill effects on anything they can see.?

Designing for the future

To be clear, though, Intel isn?t about to replace all the air-cooled servers in its data centers with oil-cooled ones. Rather, Patterson said, it?s just now in the evaluation phase. ?We?re doing our math to understand if we developed an oil optimized platform, what that would mean [for performance, efficiency, etc.].?

Intel?s servers racks in their oil homes.

The results might mean Intel adopts the technology for production, or might mean Intel can help its server-manufacturer partners drive oil immersion into the mainstream. The first serious users of the technology ? even withinin Intel ? will probably be high-performance computing departments that want to put as much power as possible toward computing and little as possible toward cooling. ?I think once it has proven itself in the HPC arena,? Patterson said, ?further adoption will be the next step.?

He?s right about the heat-related pain points in HPC. I recently spoke with Greg Rusu of Peer1 Hosting, who explained to me some of the economic challenges of its on-demand HPC cloud service called Zunicore. Unlike the commodity scale-out servers that populate many cloud data centers, Peer1?s HPC servers are chock full of powerful processors and GPUs and can cost tens of thousands of dollars per machine.

And then there?s the power bill of those high performance servers: ?These servers easily consume anywhere between 15 to 20 times the power of a high-end Xeon server,? Rusu said. ?? They?re not just a little bit hotter, they?re a lot hotter.? While immersing Peer1?s HPC servers in oil might not cut down on their sticker prices, it could signficantly reduce the cost of operating them. A handful of Green Revolution?s early customer are research centers running HPC systems.

Taking oil immersion mainstream

But not everyone is willing to retrofit air-cooled servers for a life in oil, so taking oil immersion mainstream might require letting businesses buy off-the-shelf servers designed for oil immersion. Patterson said Intel?s research into how to build oil-optimized servers could result in a reference architecture around which servers manufacturers could begin building such systems.

Most servers today follow design principles for optimal airflow, but ?we could throw some of those rules out,? he said, and maybe build a better server. The obvious steps are eliminating anything to do with fans, sealing hard drives (or going to solid-state drives) and replacing any organic materials that might leech into the oil. A redesign of the heat sink probably would be in order, as would a rethinking of where things sit on the motherboard.

Intel motherboard oil

A motherboard sitting in oil.

Although it?s a new idea to most companies, Patterson thinks the cost savings associated with oil immersion might might make it more palatable than you?d think. ?I think the C-level [acceptance] may actually happen sooner,? he said. ?? The bigger hurdle might be the data center operations folks themselves who don?t pay the energy bill.?

This is especially true as companies start building out data center space and are looking to save on construction costs as well as energy bills. Oil immersion means there?s no need for chillers, raised floors or other costly measures typically required for air cooling. And, Patterson added, it?s possible the energy stored in the hot oil could be reused more easily than the warm air servers return today, thus making a data center even more efficient.

However, as with anything new, even penny-pinching CFOs will have to come to terms with an entirely new way of operating their servers. ?The first time yo uhear about it, you think, ?Oh, come on, that?s a crazy idea? ? ? Patterson said. ?You just have to get past the initial reaction. I think it?s an emotional response more than anything.?

The demise of personal finance magazines? Not at Kiplinger's ...

2012
08.30

Knight A. Kiplinger, editor in chief, Kiplinger?s Personal Finance magazine, wonders why some people who ?gladly pay $4 for a latte at Starbucks ? sometimes every day ? balk at paying even $1 for an issue of a useful magazine.?

Hal Morris, writing on his Grumpy editor blog about Kiplinger?s note in the October issue, notes that Kiplinger?s comments evoke a mournful tone about the future of personal finance magazines given the closing of SmartMoney?s print publication.

Morris writes ?In his message, Kiplinger mentions, ?our readers are among the most highly educated and affluent of all magazine readers.? They tell market researchers that they really trust this magazine, and they spend a lot of time with each issue.?

?He adds that advertisers ?don?t seem to acknowledge the print audience? and ?they are abandoning magazines at a steady pace, apparently believing that they can reach you more effectively on Web sites, including ours.?

?Kiplinger observes that out of a half dozen personal finance publications competing in the 1990s, only Money and Kiplinger?s?continue to roll off presses.

??We?re gratified that our Web audience continues to grow, but we love the business of print publishing, and we?re committed to it,? he concludes.?

IAEA establishes Iran 'Task Force'

VIENNA (AP) ? An internal U.N. nuclear agency document obtained by The Associated Press has announced the establishment of an "Iran Task Force" to add muscle to its probe of suspicions that Tehran might be attempting to make atomic arms.

Dated Wednesday, the International Atomic Energy Agency statement says the unit will work on implementing IAEA agreements with Iran allowing it to monitor its nuclear activities as mandated by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

It also says it will also focus on "relevant" IAEA and U.N Security Council resolutions on Iran. Both have demanded that Tehran stop activities that could be used to make nuclear weapons and cooperate with the agency's investigation of suspicions Tehran worked on nuclear weapons.

Iran denies any interest in such arms and says all its nuclear activities are peaceful.

India Supreme Court upholds death sentence for Mumbai attacker

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentence for Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of a group of militants who attacked the country's financial capital, Mumbai, in 2008 killing 166 people.

"The Supreme Court has today dismissed the appeal of Mohammad Kasab," Gopal Subramaniam, a lawyer for the prosecution, told reporters after the verdict.

Kasab, a Pakistani national who said he belonged to the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, was found guilty on more than 80 charges in May 2010, including murder and waging war on India, and was sentenced to death by hanging.

He was filmed walking through Mumbai's main train station carrying an AK-47 and a knapsack on his back during an attack in which nearly 60 people were gunned down.

It was part of a series of coordinated strikes on key landmarks in the city, including luxury hotels and a Jewish centre.

The three-day rampage led to an increase in tension between India and its nuclear-armed neighbor Pakistan, causing a temporary suspension of peace talks.

New York AG taking aim at energy-drink industry

New York State is launching an investigating to find out if energy drink makers are deceiving customers with their advertisements, with CNBC's Herb Greenberg.

By Roland Jones, NBC News

First it was big sugary drinks.

Now New York is taking aim at the multibillion-dollar energy-drink industry, looking into whether it is misleading consumers with its statements about the ingredients and health value of its products.

In July, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman sent subpoenas to PepsiCo, the maker of AMP energy drinks, to Monster Beverage, which makes Monster Energy brand drinks, and to Living Essentials, the company that makes the 5-hour Energy drink, according to a person familiar with the investigation. The probe was first reported in The Wall Street Journal.

The subpoenas asked for information on the companies? marketing and advertising practices.

Energy drinks have become increasingly popular in recent years. Manufacturers often market them as a way to temporarily increase energy and alertness, but some health advocates worry that the drinks contain large amounts of caffeine and sugar, which could be harmful if consumed excessively.

New York?s investigation follows a highly publicized move by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in May to fight rising obesity by proposing a citywide ban on selling sodas and other sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in movie theaters and other locations.

The move has drawn criticism from the beverage industry, which saw sales of $115 billion in the U.S. last year, according to data from Beverage Digest, a trade publication.

The energy drinks sector is far smaller but growing rapidly, with U.S. sales rising 16 percent to $8.9 billion last year and accounting for 12 percent of the carbonated-soft-drink category.

The energy drink business is a ?very tiny? part of the business?of giants such as Coke and Pepsico, said John Sicher, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest. Top sellers include Monster Energy, Red Bull, which is owned by an Austrian company Red Bull GmbH, and Rockstar Energy Drinks, he added.

New York investigators are looking into whether makers of the energy drinks are overstating the benefits of exotic-sounding ingredients in their drinks, while understating the amount of caffeine they contain. Industry critics believe caffeine is likely the main active ingredient in the drinks.

Energy drinks boast such unusual-sounding ingredients as guarana, ginkgo, ginseng and milk thistle, yet the labels on the drinks show they have much larger quantities of caffeine and taurine -- a naturally occurring amino acid present in high concentrations in many energy drinks.

In a statement, the American Beverage Association, which represents the non-alcoholic beverage industry, said it wasn?t aware of the details of the investigation and therefore could not comment on it.

However, the ABA did point out that, like all foods and beverages, energy drinks' ingredients and labeling are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

?Despite the misperception, most mainstream energy drinks contain about half the caffeine of a similar size cup of coffeehouse coffee,? the ABA said.

Earlier this month the FDA found that the caffeine content in energy drinks does not pose a safety issue.

The findings came after Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois sent a letter to the FDA?s commissioner calling for an investigation following the death of a 14-year-old girl from Maryland who died of a cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity after drinking two 24-ounce Monster energy drinks in a 24-hour period.

Monster Beverage disclosed in a regulatory filing on Aug. 9 that it had received a subpoena from an unnamed state attorney general ?in connection with an investigation concerning the company?s advertising, marketing, promotion, ingredients, usage and sale of its Monster Energy brand of energy drinks.?

Similarly, 5-hour Energy disclosed in a July bond-offering memorandum that a state attorney general recently requested documents about its product and marketing, the Journal reported.

The New York Attorney General?s office declined to comment for this article.

Enlisting the AIDS virus to fight cancer

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Can HIV be transformed into a biotechnological tool for improving human health? According to a CNRS team at the Architecture et R?activit? de l'ARN (RNA Architecture and Reactivity) laboratory, the answer is yes. Taking advantage of the HIV replication machinery, the researchers have been able to select a specific mutant protein. Added to a culture of tumor cells in combination with an anticancer drug, this protein improves the effectiveness of the treatment at 1/300 the normal dosage levels.

Published in PLoS Genetics on 23 August 2012, these findings could lead to long-term therapeutic applications in the treatment of cancer and other pathologies.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, uses human cell material to multiply, primarily by inserting its genetic material into the host cells' genome. The distinctive characteristic of HIV is that it mutates constantly, and consequently generates several mutant proteins (or variants) in the course of its successive multiplications. This phenomenon allows the virus to adapt to repeated environmental changes and resist the antiviral treatments that have been developed so far.

At the IBMC (Institut de Biologie Mol?culaire et Cellulaire) in Strasbourg, the researchers of the CNRS Architecture et R?activit? de l'ARN laboratory had the idea of using this multiplication strategy to rechannel the effects of the virus for therapeutic purposes, in particular the treatment of cancer.

They first altered the HIV genome by introducing a human gene that is found in all cells: the gene for deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), a protein that activates anticancer drugs (2). Researchers have been trying to produce a more effective form of dCK for several years. Through HIV multiplication, the CNRS team has selected a "library" of nearly 80 mutant proteins and tested them on tumor cells in the presence of an anticancer drug. The results have enabled them to identify a dCK variant that is more effective than the wild-type (non-mutated) protein, inducing the death of tumor cells in culture. In combination with this protein, the anticancer drugs showed identical effectiveness at 1/300 the dose. The possibility of reducing the doses of anticancer drugs would palliate the problems posed by their components' toxicity, reduce their side effects and, most importantly, improve their effectiveness.

One advantage of this experimental technique is that the mutant proteins were tested directly on cells in culture. The next step in the years to come will be preclinical (animal) studies on the isolated mutant protein. In addition, this experimental system using a normally life-threatening virus is likely to lead to a great many other therapeutic applications.

Careless smoking cause of Tyler Perry studio fire

ATLANTA (AP) ? Investigators have determined that a fire at filmmaker Tyler Perry's Atlanta studios was caused by careless smoking.

Capt. Marian McDaniel is with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department. McDaniel said Tuesday that no criminal charges were pending.

The fire broke out Monday morning on the roof of a building undergoing repairs. It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control. The structural integrity of the building was not compromised.

This was the second blaze in recent months at the filming complex. On May 1, more than 100 firefighters battled a blaze that ripped through a simulated streetscape at the studios, sending flames about six stories into the sky. The cause of that fire was not determined because the intensity of that fire consumed any evidence that could be used to determine its origin.

What is diabetes type 1.5? - Health Niche

In the year 2000, the World Health Organization WHO reckoned that 171 million people all over the world were suffering from diabetes. Experts predict that by the year 2030, there will be approximately 366 million people affected by the disease. Diabetes belongs to a group of metabolic diseases leading to a high and life-threatening blood sugar. Most popularly, the defect is divided into two subcategories: diabetes type one and diabetes type two. Whereas type one is caused by a failure to produce the hormone insulin and often occurs at an early age, type two results from an insulin resistance developing with age. However, there is also an in-between type which has been coined diabetes type 1.5 and which is also known as LADA, i.e. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults.

    LADA: How come?

The in-between type is described as a condition in which diabetes type one develops in an adult age. That is due to the fact that the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells can occur at different rates. If it happens fast, it leads to symptoms at an early age (type one), if it happens slowly, it leads to problems at a later age (LADA). In order to test an emerging diabetes type one, and to avoid a misdiagnosis of type two which also happens at an adult age, it is necessary to conduct antibody tests. People suffering from LADA can show a positive reaction to the antibodies test, people suffering from type two are unlikely to do so. Laboratories own ELISA kits for scientific research in order to get the results.

    Avoiding a misdiagnosis

It is estimated that 20 percent of the people officially suffering from diabetes type two actually suffer from type 1.5. In order to optimize the treatment of these people, which does not in every case require an insulin therapy but might also be managed through changes in nutrition and lifestyle, antibody tests should be conducted more than once as it may track the progression of the disease. How far medical research has developed can be seen in the huge amounts of antibody test applications offered at www.antibodies-online.com/.

Powerful typhoon approaches Japan's Okinawa island

TOKYO (AP) ? The strongest typhoon to approach Okinawa in several years was bearing down on the southern Japanese island on Sunday as officials warned residents to stay indoors and take the utmost precaution to ensure their families' safety.

Slow-moving Typhoon Bolaven was centered about 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Okinawa and was expected to pass over the island Sunday evening, dumping as much as 500 millimeters (20 inches) of rain over a 24-hour period, weather officials said.

The typhoon was packing extremely strong gusts reaching 250-kilometers-per-hour (155-miles-per-hour), which could knock over telephone poles and even overturn cars, public broadcaster NHK warned. Waves could top 12 meters (13 yards), it said.

So far there were no reports of injuries or major damage, disaster officials in Okinawa said.

Gusts from the typhoon could equal or surpass the previous record of 265 kph (165 mph) gusts in a 1956 typhoon, said Tsukasa Uezu, an official with the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory.

Those strong gusts combined with the slow pace of the storm's movement ? 15 kph (9 mph) to the northwest ? meant that the typhoon could inflict serious damage, officials warned.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency said maximum wind speed near the center of the typhoon was 180 kph (112 mph). It issued storm and storm surge warnings in Okinawa prefecture and for high waves in the waters around the island.

More than half the 50,000 U.S. troops based in Japan are stationed in Okinawa. At Kadena Air Base, one of the biggest bases on the island, all shops and service facilities were ordered closed and movement around the base was to be kept to a minimum. All entry into the ocean was prohibited.

Romney admits Democratic attacks are hurting him with voters

The Romneys head into speech prep in Wolfeboro, NH (Evan Vucci/AP)BOSTON?Mitt Romney is spending Monday morning doing speech prep at an elementary school near his vacation home in Wolfeboro, N.H., but he's already giving hints about what he will say Thursday night when he accepts the GOP nomination at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

In an interview with USA Today's Susan Page, Romney says his wife, Ann, will offer a glimpse of his personal side to voters in her convention speech. But when he takes the stage, it will be all business.

"We won't be talking about my life," Romney tells USA Today. "We'll be talking about policy."

It's a notable choice even as Romney bluntly acknowledges in both the USA Today interview and in a separate interview with Politico that some voters just don't like him. He accuses President Barack Obama and his allies of "personal vilification and demonization"?and admits their attacks have been effective.

[Related: Ron Paul doesn't 'fully endorse' Romney]

"There are plenty of weaknesses that I have, and I acknowledge that," Romney tells USA Today. "But the attacks that have come have been so misguided, have been so far off target, have been so dishonest, that they surprised me. I thought they might go after me on things that were accurate that I've done wrong, instead of absurd things."

Among the examples Romney cites: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's claims that he hadn't paid personal taxes in a decade, which the GOP candidate described as "ridiculous."

"The attack about how Romney's responsible for this woman who died ? and the vice president's comments about 'chains.' Really?" Romney told USA Today. "The White House just keeps stepping lower and lower and lower, and the people of America know this is an important election and they deserve better than they've seen."

But Romney insists he won't change his focus to appeal more to voters on an emotional basis.

"I know there are some people who do a very good job acting and pretend they're something they're not. ... You get what you see. I am who I am," Romney told Politico's Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen. "I don't think everybody likes me. I don't believe that, by any means. But I do believe that people of this country are looking for someone who can get the country growing again with more jobs and more take-home pay, and I think they realize this president had four years to do that. ? He got every piece of legislation he wanted passed, and it didn't work. I think they want someone who has a different record, and I do."

But while Romney assailed the Obama campaign for its attacks, the presumptive Republican nominee has grown more aggressive on the trail in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, he slammed Obama for running a campaign based on "division and anger and hate." He's accused Obama of trying to undo historic welfare reforms requiring recipients to work and of using Medicare funds to pay for so-called "Obamacare"?two lines of attack that have been disputed by independent fact-checkers.

On Friday, Romney made a birth certificate joke during a rally in Michigan that was widely interpreted as a dig at conspiracy theories that Obama wasn't born in the United States?though Romney later insisted it wasn't a joke about Obama.

Asked about the joke, Romney told both USA Today and Politico he was simply being "human" and "spontaneous" and injecting a little humor into the campaign. And he argued that Obama's attacks have been personal, while his attacks on Obama have been based on policy.

He tells USA Today that Obama and his allies have tried "to minimize me as an individual, to make me a bad person, an unacceptable person."

"I think in the final analysis, people will recognize those attacks for what they are, and they'll make a decision based on who can do a better job creating jobs and providing more take-home pay for the middle class of America," Romney told USA Today. "I believe I am that person."

Because I Am Not My Freaking Illness | On Oxnard Shores

On Wednesday, I cancelled therapy indefinitely. Left a message for my therapist, told him I didn?t want to do the hypnotherapy thing to re-experience trauma and whatever to make all the feelings go away and thereby unblock my creativity. But not in so many words. Just said, I?m not open to it, and I?m taking a break, will call back if I feel like talking, etc. However, I have recently realized that I don?t want to talk anymore but start doing and get on with my life. I was reading that women go into menopause in their 40s-50s. I want to have a sex life/partner before I dry up. I want more in life, so screw it, and screw the naysayers, the doubters.

I?m going to try. I want to beat this inertia. I think I have more to give. I want to live my life, my dream. Not retire in Oxnard all alone with a depressed outlook and wait until my parents die to be free, and end up killing myself because I find out I have no one, nothing, at all. I want to finish my book, try to get it published, lose weight, and not act like a mental patient. And someday fall in love again for real and have a life partner, companion, and all those good things I deserve. Speak my mind. Own my voice. Not let anyone but me define me. And try to always speak and write in such a way that I can be proud of myself. Maybe I am being unrealistic, but fuck it. Having a big dream is better than not having one at all.

I think I am a smarter person than the way I have expressed myself at times in my blog and other writings (i.e., erotica). Maybe I am setting myself up for failure or disappointment. Maybe I am really really a fucked up mentally ill human being, and I am just deluding myself. But I don?t think I?m stupid. I was smart enough to get a Bachelor?s in English and a Master?s in Creative Writing. I don?t want to be my illness. I want to be more than a maybe she could have been. I just can?t imagine my life going on like this. I don?t want to be afraid anymore. Should I give up and be my illness, or should I try, just try, to be more than this sad and lonely person who hardly leaves the house? Whatever. I?m finishing the novel, damn it. I?m going to be a bipolar who makes it. Or at least, I?m going to try.

Scams involving currency conversion used by car rental companies ...

When you buy services using a credit card in your own country, there are transaction charges but, in most cases, they are only paid by the merchants who sell you the goods or services (although they will increase their retail prices to cover the charges, of course). But the moment you use the credit card to buy goods or services in a different currency, you will suddenly find extra charges appearing. The first is simply for handling a transaction in a foreign currency. The second is the currency exchange rate commission.

If the bank is being honest, it will charge the prevailing national exchange rate. This will mean the transaction has a neutral cost. But if the bank is less than honest, it will use a lower exchange rate. This means it costs you more to buy the goods and services than if you went to a money changer and used cash. Worse, you are being charged for being given the poor value in the transaction. For these purposes, it can be worth acquiring a ?foreign? credit card if you?re a regular traveler. You will avoid foreign currency charges this way, although you will need to avoid a further problem.

Some international car rental companies operate their own currency conversion. So let?s say you have a US$ credit card and you go to a branch of a US rental company in Paris. Some branches do their own currency conversions and bill your credit card in US dollars. That sounds good to you because there are no foreign currency conversion charges to pay. But suppose that conversion uses an exchange rate that?s significantly worse than international rate. You might be paying 10 or 15% more than locals would pay, i.e. rather more than your honest bank would charge you.

Some local car rental companies offer conversion through third party banks. This sounds good. You?re being billed in your own currency so no administrative fees. But what often happens is that the exchange rate is very poor and the difference between the rate you pay and the rate the converter uses is split with the rental company. To reduce the risk of being scammed you should refuse the option of local conversion if you speak the local language, or just prepay.

A look at telecom-industry subscriber reports

Telecommunications companies have been releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here is a summary of reports for selected telecommunications companies and what they reveal about their own and the industry's prospects.

? July 19: Verizon Communications Inc. says its wireless unit gained a net 1.2 million subscribers ? a strong result in an industry where subscriber gains have tapered off now that nearly everyone has a cellphone. Of the new subscribers, 888,000 were on contract-based plans, which are the most lucrative. Verizon Wireless has 94.2 million retail subscribers. The profit margin at Verizon Wireless was the highest ever, as average monthly fees for contract-signing subscribers rose 3.7 percent to $56.13. Verizon is benefiting from the growing popularity of smartphones, which come with data fees.

? July 24: AT&T Inc. says it saw declining smartphone sales, leading to the best profitability ever in its wireless arm as it saved on phone subsidies. It activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million a year ago. Much of the decline came because AT&T subscribers are holding on to their phones longer. AT&T added a net 320,000 subscribers on contract-based plans in the quarter. However, more than half of the new subscribers were tablet users, who pay less than smartphone users.

? July 26: Sprint Nextel Corp. reports it was successful in persuading smartphone subscribers to pay up for "unlimited data" service, and its service revenue zoomed, beating estimates. Sprint activated 1.5 million iPhones in the quarter, the same number as in the first quarter. By contrast, AT&T and Verizon saw a drop in iPhone activations as the excitement around the latest model, the iPhone 4S, cooled. Sprint is the only one of the four national wireless carriers that still offers unlimited data service, though it offers relatively slow data speeds.

MetroPCS Communications Inc., a provider of contract-free service, says it lost about 186,000 subscribers to end the quarter at 9.3 million.

? July 31: Frontier Communications Corp. ended the quarter with 3.1 million residential lines, down about 67,000 from the previous quarter.

? Aug. 1: Comcast Corp. says it added 158,000 phone customers to end the quarter with 9.7 million.

? Aug. 2: Time Warner Cable Inc. says it added 45,000 residential phone customers to end with 5 million.

? Aug. 3: U.S. Cellular Corp., a unit of Telephone Data and Systems Inc., lost a record 48,000 subscribers from contract-based plans in the quarter. That was partly offset by a gain of 20,000 contract-free customers. The company ended the quarter with 5.8 million customers, making it the seventh-largest cellphone company in the country.

? Aug. 6: Leap Wireless International Inc., the nation's sixth-largest cellphone carrier and operator of the Cricket brand, says it lost 289,000 customers during the quarter to end with 5.9 million.

? Aug. 8: CenturyLink Inc. says it had 14.1 million access lines, a loss of 234,000 during the quarter.

? Aug. 9: T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, says it lost a net 205,000 subscribers in the second quarter, a record for the period. Among phone subscribers under contract, it lost 557,000 subscribers, also the highest number of the second quarter.

Windstream Corp. says it has 2.9 million phone lines. It lost about 29,000 during the quarter.

? Tuesday: MetroPCS, a cellphone company that targets low-income urban households, says it's cutting the price on its unlimited data service, going against the flow of the biggest phone companies, including AT&T and Verizon. MetroPCS has just activated a new fourth-generation, or "4G" data network, leaving it with some spare capacity.

? Wednesday: T-Mobile says it will start selling an unlimited-data plan again on Sept. 5, after stopping sales of such plans early last year. T-Mobile had been calling all its data plans "unlimited," but once a customer hits a certain level of usage in a month, it would slow down speeds drastically. Under T-Mobile's new unlimited plans, all data would be at maximum speed.

New strain of hand, foot and mouth virus worries parents, pediatricians

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Your child goes to bed in perfect health. The next morning she wakes up with high fever, malaise and bright red blisters erupting all over her body. Johns Hopkins Children's Center dermatologists say the disturbing scenario has become quite common in the last few months, sending scared parents to their pediatrician's office or straight to the emergency room.

Bernard Cohen, M.D., director of pediatric dermatology at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, and colleague Kate Puttgen, M.D., have seen or consulted on close to 50 such cases in the last few months and have received countless phone calls from scared parents and concerned physicians. Cohen believes this number may be just the tip of the iceberg with primary care pediatricians seeing the bulk of new cases.

Cohen and Puttgen want to reassure parents that most cases of the disease are benign and that nearly all patients recover in seven to 10 days without treatment and without serious complications.

"What we are seeing is relatively common viral illness called hand-foot-and-mouth disease but with a new twist," Cohen says.

The culprit is an unusual strain of the common coxsackie virus that usually causes the disease. The new strain, coxsackie A6, previously found only in Africa and Asia, is now cropping up all over the United States.

The coxsackie virus strikes infants and children under age 5 in the summer and autumn months. Symptoms include fever and malaise and, a day or two later, a non-itchy skin rash with flat or raised red spots on the hands and feet and/or mouth sores. The new strain, however, behaves somewhat differently from its homegrown cousin, Cohen says. It carries a slightly higher risk for more serious illness and more widespread rash that can involve the arms, legs, face and diaper area. The new strain also seems to affect older as well as younger children.

"We've talked with many of our pediatric dermatology colleagues around the country and the number of cases and the severity of the rash is clearly new and different from the typical hand, foot and mouth disease we are used to seeing," adds Puttgen. "The good news is that it looks bad but hasn't actually caused severe symptoms for our patients."

The new virus can also cause a rash that mimics lesions of herpes simplex virus, which requires treatment with antivirals.

"It can look like disseminated herpes simplex, and parents may panic if they don't know what it is," Cohen says. "But unlike herpes simplex, this rash evolves very fast. It's bad for a few days and then gets better very quickly without any treatment at all."

To reduce the spread of the virus, Cohen and Puttgen advise frequent hand washing and good general hygiene. Pediatricians need not refer patients to a specialist if they recognize the rash for what it is and if the child is otherwise healthy, they say. "If the child has low-grade fever, but is otherwise well, waiting and watching is appropriate," Cohen says. "If the child is having problems with feeding or drinking or acting ill, it's time to call the doctor." Specifically, Cohen says, children with immune deficiencies, cancer or other serious illness should be followed closely by their pediatrician to avoid or promptly treat any complications.

Gay NYC judge challenges father's will

A gay man and his longtime partner decide to become parents using a surrogate mother. Shortly after their son is born, the couple gets married. But there's a catch for this modern family: A will left by the man's wealthy father decrees that he must marry the mother for the child to collect an inheritance.

      7. Live: Ask Education Secretary Duncan a question

That quandary has prompted the man, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Robert M. Mandelbaum, to contest the will in surrogate's court.

Mandelbaum has filed a petition on behalf of his now 2-year-old son, Cooper, that argues that a condition that might "induce the beneficiary to enter into a sham marriage of convenience" should be invalid.

The petition makes two further arguments: that Mandelbaum's partner could be considered the boy's "mother," and that excluding the boy from sharing in the family fortune would run counter to public policies protecting same-sex marriages and their offspring.

The petition portrays the father as being accepting of his son's lifestyle. But the will doesn't make clear why the father appeared to contradict that when it came to his estate.

An attorney for Mandelbaum declined comment on Thursday.

A proposed settlement reached by Mandelbaum and the guardians of two other grandchildren that would give equal stakes in a trust set up by the grandfather is pending court approval, though it could be a longshot.

Joshua S. Rubenstein, a Manhattan lawyer specializing in estate planning, said decedents have a right to shun possible beneficiaries ? whether it's because they have two fathers or because they married someone of a different race or any other reason that might sound unreasonable or even cruel.

"We might all find that repugnant, but it's your property and you can do whatever you want with it," Rubenstein said.

Mandelbaum may have "a very strong public policy argument, but the (father's) wishes may be controlling in this case," said Laura E. Stegossi, a Philadelphia estates lawyer.

The 47-year-old Mandelbaum is the son of Frank Mandelbaum, a successful Long Island businessman who died in 2007. The father was chairman and chief executive of Intelli-Check, a Woodbury, N.Y.-based maker of software that verifies the authenticity of driver's licenses and other forms of identification.

The elder Mandelbaum's will set up a trust worth hundreds of thousands for his grandchildren and their decedents. However, the will excluded any "adopted child of Robert, if adopted while Robert is a single person, or a biological child of Robert ... if Robert shall not be married to the child's mother within six months of the child's birth."

According to court documents, Mandelbaum is the biological father of Cooper, who was born in Pomona, Calif., on April, 5, 2010. The boy was conceived by using his sperm to fertilize an egg from an anonymous donor that was then implanted in the uterus of a second woman.

Mandelbaum's petition notes that a California birth certificate lists him as the "Father/Parent" and his partner, a tax lawyer, as the "Mother/Parent." The pair married in Connecticut on July 2, 2010 ? within six months of Cooper's birth.

The petition argues that the disputed provision in the will was intended only to "ensure that any children born to Robert were raised in the context of a legally recognized and committed marital relationship."

Mandelbaum's father knew his son was in a committed relationship with another man, and frequently socialized and traveled with them, the papers add.

"Thus if it was the intent of the will were to require that Robert marry a woman, the will would thereby reflect an attempt to induce the breakup of an existing family," they say. "Any will provision reflecting such an intent is likewise unenforceable as against public policy."

New Belgium's Red Hoptober Beer Review | - The Brew Bros

New Bel?gium Brew?ing Company?s Hop?to?ber quickly became one of my favorite fall sea?son?als so last Sep?tem?ber when we heard from one of our local New Bel?gium Beer Rangers (see story here) ?that it would be replaced by a new sea?sonal, my heart sank a bit. ?That being said, I was full of antic?i?pa?tion to get my hands on the replace?ment, Red Hop?to?ber, and see how it would stack up against its predecessor.

?Fall is here and with it our sea?sonal ale, Red Hop?to?ber. Shin?ing like autumn leaves in a globe glass this beer pours a dark and lovely gar?net as it builds a bright, invit?ing head. The Eldo?rado hops are bold and present with a dis?tinct, piney fla?vor while the caramel malt and roasted bar?ley pro?vide a back?bone to stand Red Hop?to?ber upright. Cen?ten?nial and Cas?cade hops offer hints of cit?rus, tick?ling the nose, while the tongue car?ries a sub?tle, roasty tone that pairs pleas?antly with the warm?ing bite of bit?ter. Red Hop?to?ber is per?fect for short?en?ing days and camp?fire nights.? ? New Bel?gium Brew?ing Company

    Pour, Color and?Aroma:

I poured the Red Hop?to?ber into a glass and it set?tled into a glow?ing red/bright brown color. The off-white ?head lin?gered in a rocky form for a sig?nif?i?cant amount of time and really tested my patience. Visu?ally, the beer was very appealing.

The aroma was extremely pleas?ant and sur?pris?ing. The hops were the first thing I noticed because of how fresh they smelled. I felt as though I had stuck my nose into a pack?age of hops from the local home brew store. Pine, cit?rus and lemon?grass seemed to be the most dom?i?nat?ing of the hop char?ac?ter?is?tics. Round?ing out the aroma, were dis?tinct notes of sweet caramel and toasted bread.

    Taste:

The fla?vor of the beer was also a bit sur?pris?ing. Again, the hops were more promi?nent, how?ever, I felt there was a?sig?nif?i?cant?roasted qual?ity to the beer. At times, I had to look ?to make sure it was as light in color as it was. ?A sur?pris?ing choco?late ?wove its way through the?intri?ca?cies?0f the hop flavors.

    Fin?ish and?Body:

The fin?ish of this beer was its strong suit. After tak?ing a sip, the bit?ter?ness and fla?vors built up quickly and I was wor?ried they would be over-bearing and out of bal?ance, but then the malty sweet?ness crept in to bal?ance every?thing out ?and left a pleas?ant stick?i?ness on the palate. It had a medium body with a slight bit of carbonation.

    Final Thoughts:

This beer is another exam?ple of why New Bel?gium is as suc?cess?ful as they are. At a?con?sis?tent?rate, they are able to pro?duce new beers that push the style lim?its with?out being over?whelm?ingly off? ?bal?ance. They took an already excel?lent beer in Hop?to?ber and replaced it with a brew that is extremely well bal?anced as well as full of fla?vors that every beer drinker can relate to in the hops and malts. ?Once again, cheers New Bel?gium for another won?der?ful?beer!

Saving For Retirement. How Much To Save? | Cash The Checks

It has been drilled in to our heads ever since we started our first job: you need to save for your retirement. That of course begs the question of how much do we need to save and when do we start? While this article will not be able to tell you an exact number in regards to your personal situation it will attempt to spark some ideas in your brain that will give you a good idea on where to start.

This is going to sound almost too simplistic to be good advice but your first tip is to save as much as possible. There?s no such thing as saving too much for retirement. The reason is because the future is so unpredictable. If you don?t have a mortgage and are only able to rent, how much will your rent be in the future? What about the cost of filling up your tank of gas? For all you know food prices could skyrocket by the time you retire. We already know that health care costs can only go up. It is for that reason that you should put away as much as you can right now.

I understand that the economy is down the tubes, I understand there are always unexpected emergencies and I understand that bills need to be paid. But you need to add your retirement savings into your budget just like you add your bills to it. Better yet, get involved with a 401k plan at your job so they deduct the money from your paycheck before you even see it.

As far as how much to save for retirement, young people should be saving about 10 percent of their income. When you?re young it can be hard to save for retirement because it seems so far away, you have student loans to pay back, you?re buying your first car, saving to buy a house and beginning a family. But retirement savings should not be ignored.

The earlier you start saving the better. The reason is that your money will earn interest. If you add $3,000 to your retirement account at a young age it will turn into $50,000 by the time you retire. Now imagine if you added that amount every single year? You?ll end up at $750,000.

As you get older your expenses should decrease. You no longer feel the need to buy a flashy car, your kids have moved out and hopefully you would have already paid your mortgage off. This means you can pump your retirement account with a higher percentage of your income, say 25%. But if you never bothered to save for retirement in your younger years you?ll need to step it up even more and set aside as much as you can.

Saving for retirement is crucial because your options of being able to come up with money in a time of need are severely limited. If you?re in need of fast cash in retirement, your only hope may be to re-mortgage your home or refinance. But either of these two options can take a long time. When you have a paycheck coming in every two weeks this opens the possibility of getting?quick online loans. These types of loans offer you?cash before payday, like a cash advance on your future pay checks. While these fast cash options aren?t the best types of loans to get, sometimes it?s the only hope for those in a dire financial situation.
