Nexus Q: Will your living room revolve around Google's sphere?

Google says the spherical Nexus Q media server is "the world's first social streaming media player." With easy cloud connectivity and a built-in amp, Google's Nexus Q has a lot going for it -- but how does it compare to the Apple TV or the Roku?

Amid all the skydiving hoopla at its I/O developers conference on Wednesday, Google made a more quiet introduction: it unveiled a small black-and-cyan sphere that could replace -- or at least become the centerpiece of -- your media center.

The Nexus Q, about four and a half inches in diameter, is an Android-powered home media server that?s designed to grab your tunes, movies, or TV shows from the cloud and stream them to your favorite screen and set of speakers. In that respect it?s awfully similar to the Apple TV or the Roku (or, for that matter, the not-terribly-popular Google TV), but there are a few things that set the Nexus Q apart.

The Nexus Q can be operated by any device running Android 2.3 ?Gingerbread? or higher (which includes almost all modern Android phones and tablets). Your device of choice acts as a remote control, telling the Nexus Q what to stream -- a slightly simpler setup than Apple?s Airplay protocol, in which content is streamed from the cloud to an iPad or iPhone, then rebroadcast to a screen or speakers. Right now the Nexus Q works with Google Play and YouTube, although it?ll undoubtedly be supported by third-party apps like Netflix and Pandora before too long.

Google also decided to make the Nexus Q a ?social streaming media player,? meaning that it?s set up to be accessible to people with many different devices. Any number of Android devices can connect to the Nexus Q as remote controls -- so party guests can add songs from their libraries to the queue, share their movies, or stream YouTube videos to your TV. (Presumably there?ll be some sort of password feature to keep strangers from walking past your apartment and changing what you?re watching or listening to.)

The Nexus Q also has a built-in 25W speaker amp, which means you can pump sound to a pair of nice speakers, without having to have a separate home theater receiver. On the back of the sphere is a micro-HDMI output, an Ethernet port, optical and banana speaker outputs, and a micro-USB port (Google coyly says the latter is ?to encourage general hackability?). Inside are 16GB of flash memory and Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC radios.

The inclusion of the onboard amp probably contributes to the device?s surprisingly high $299 price. (It?s also worth mentioning that all Nexus Qs will be assembled in the US and contain almost exclusively American components, which undoubtedly drives the manufacturing costs up a bit.) The New York Times reports that Google expects to bring the price down as more units are sold, which is a small comfort. Still, as slick-looking as the Nexus Q is, it faces an uphill battle against similar sub-$100 streaming boxes like the Apple TV and the Roku.

Dinosaurs' cold blood in doubt

One of the strongest lines of evidence that dinosaurs were cold-blooded, like modern reptiles, has been knocked down.

Prior studies of dinosaur bones uncovered what are known as "lines of arrested growth".

The creatures were presumed to be cold-blooded because modern cold-blooded animals show these same lines.

But scientists reporting in Nature have studied the bones of 41 modern mammal species from around the world, finding every one had these lines as well.

The idea that dinosaurs are cold-blooded, or ectothermic, goes back to the 19th Century. But a number of discoveries 1960s have been challenging that notion.

Because soft tissues such as organs and skin are not preserved (with a few notable exceptions), much of what is known about dinosaurs must be inferred from their bones, and comparisons made with modern animals that can be studied in greater detail.

Lagging behind

Lines of arrested growth, or Lags, occur because organisms tend to suspend their growth and rally their resources during seasonal periods of environmental stress such as cold or dry conditions.

This forms a boundary from one season to the next as growth resumes when conditions are more favourable.

They are familiar in creatures such as molluscs, whose slow annual accumulations can be seen as ridges in their shells.

Lags have also been found in the bones of reptiles and amphibians and have until now been assumed to be limited to ectotherms - cold-blooded animals - that are more subject to the whims of harsh environments.

Meike Koehler of the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology in Barcelona and her colleagues were therefore surprised by what they found.

"Originally this was not a paper that we aimed to do," Dr Koehler told BBC News.

"We were very curious to know how environmental conditions and changes affect bone growth in fossil and extant mammals, to get a good idea about... how they may have coped with these changes in the past."

As the team studied the thigh bones of animals from all over the world - ranging from the Svalbard reindeer in the Arctic to muntjac deer species from South Asia - Lags showed up in every one.

"These lines of arrested growth have been used a lot in dinosaurs, but nobody has ever had a really deep look at mammals," Dr Koehler explained.

David Weishampel, a palaeontologist at the Center for Functional Anatomy and Evolution at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Maryland called the new work "a wonderful paper" and said it was a welcome addition to the debate.

"I think most (palaeontologists) regard dinosaurs as being [warm-blooded] but there's a lot of waffling in the data that appeared before that wasn't conclusive," he told BBC News.

"It's about time we have a connection between the modern bone histology and fossil bone histology, through a very nice ecological and metabolic comparison."

While Prof Weishampel considers it a closed case, Dr Koehler herself is more reserved about the result.

"I don't think that this debate is really settled," she said. "But this is the first time that you can say that Lags do not say anything about warm- or cold-bloodedness."

She and her team will go on and put the Lags to use in studies of modern animals instead.

"It's like dendrochronology - the rings in trees. You can do skeletal chronology in bones and infer things like longevity, age at maturity, juvenile states - traits which are very, very important to get an idea about the health of a population and whether it is vulnerable.

"It is very good to know now that mammals do show these Lags and we can use them in the same way that we do in amphibians and reptiles to understand the situation of a population."

Christie's launches online auctions with wine sale | Google Drive

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Christie?s, the global auction house, said on Monday that it is launching a series of online sales for global collectors that will run in parallel with its traditional sales.

The online auctions, beginning with the sale of rare and fine wines, follow the successful online component of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor, which totaled $9.5 million and an online charity auction of Hermes handbags that fetched $229,000.

?The success of these two pilots demonstrates our clients around the world are eagerly embracing online-only sales as a regular addition to Christie?s calendar of traditional live auctions,? Steven P. Murphy, chief executive officer, Christie?s International, said in a statement.

The global online-exclusive wine sale will include ?82 Lafite and Latour, magnums of fine Champagne, beautifully aged Port, and hard-to-source California cult wines from Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle, the 246-year-old auction house said.

The 301 lots are estimated to sell for a total of more than $750,000. Estimates for individual lots range from $200 to $35,000.

?As a collecting category, wine lends itself very well to a global, online-only auction platform,? said Scott Torrence, vice president and senior wine specialist. ?As a way of doing business, online-only sales are a very natural progression that provides our clients with even more opportunities to build and broaden their collections of fine and rare wines.?

Online bidding for the wines, which can be viewed in an e-catalogue, begins on August 6 and closes two weeks later.

Exome sequencing gives cheaper, faster diagnosis in heterogeneous disease, study shows

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? The first report of the diagnostic use of the technique of exome sequencing, where short sequences of DNA are analysed, shows that it can give good results at low cost, a researcher from The Netherlands will tell the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics June 25. The scientists were able to perform a genetic diagnosis in around 20% of 100 cases of patients with intellectual disability (ID) and 50% of the 25 cases of blindness studied. Not only is the exome test cheaper, but results are available more quickly than with Sanger sequencing^[1], they say.

Dr. Marcel Nelen, head of the Core Genome Analysis Laboratory of the Genetics Department at Radboud University Medical Centre, Nijmegen, will describe to delegates how he and colleagues at the University examined exome sequences from 262 patients with six heterogeneous diseases: ID, blindness, deafness, movement disorders, cancer, and OXPHOS diseases^[2]. In all, the researchers analysed about 500 exome sequences. In the ID cases, exomes from the father, mother and the child were analysed; in all the other diseases, the exome data from the patient alone was filtered for known causative disease genes.

"The chances of finding a causal mutation in a single gene is small," says Dr. Nelen, "but in a package containing more than 100 genes it is high, as our results from the blindness patients show. This new strategy means that we can analyse up to 20,000 genes with a single generic test, and the high throughput and lower cost means that we can test more for less money. But before we implemented the test more widely in our laboratory we needed to be sure that it would give us reliable diagnostic results."

Exons are short sequences of DNA representing the regions in genes that are translated into protein. The human genome contains about 180,000 exons, constituting about 1% of the total genome. While exome sequencing is only able to identify those conditions where protein function is affected, scientists believe that the exon regions contain about 85% of all disease-causing mutations. And while Sanger sequencing looks at around 500 base pairs per analysis, the new gene sequencing technologies (next generation sequencing or NGS) look at millions of sequencing reactions per analysis.

The Dutch researchers were entering new territory and so needed to write the rulebook themselves. "There were no best practice guidelines available for exome sequencing, and so we had to create diagnostic workflows, procedures and criteria. What criteria did we have to set before we could authorise the outcome? What type of informed consent was necessary? How could we organise confirmation of our results? All these questions had to be answered, and we undertook numerous discussions with clinical geneticists, researchers and ethicists before we could get started," Dr. Nelen says.

The results then needed to be confirmed. "We validated our results by using Sanger sequencing, the standard method of genetic diagnosis which has a very high sensitivity and specificity," Dr. Nelen will say. In addition to ID and blindness, confirmed diagnostic results in the other diseases analysed to date were impressive. In deafness disease-causing mutations were found in about 20% of cases, in movement disorders between 15 -- 20%, and in OXPHOS diseases causal mutations were found in about 25% of the patients studied.

"Although it is often not possible to treat their diseases, we should take into account that most of these patients will have had a long and worrying journey through different doctors and hospitals before they are diagnosed," says Dr. Nelen. "Exome sequencing can shorten that route, and it can also simplify the work of clinicians because they don't have to make a decision about which gene to test for -- with 100 or more genes per disease, that can be a very difficult decision to make. Exome sequencing tests for all the causative gene mutations at the same time, and that means that fast and accurate diagnoses can be made. Even if there is no treatment available, such diagnoses can help parents, patients and clinicians to make well-informed decisions on treatment and care, as well as being able to plan for the future."

A further advantage of the technique is its flexibility. If a new, clinically relevant gene is discovered, it can be added to the testing list and the data reanalysed if necessary. There are limits as to what exome sequencing can do, the researchers say, but these technical difficulties will diminish as the technique matures and evolves, and for now the fact that so many patients that can benefit from the technique, as opposed to time-consuming and costly Sanger sequencing strategies, easily outweighs these disadvantages.

"We need to be able to reduce the price of the exome test yet further before we can offer it more widely," Dr. Nelen will conclude. "In the future I am sure that genome sequencing will become cheaper, and this is really the gold standard; it provides a single test that detects all possible pathogenic genetic variation, whereas exome sequencing still misses mutations due to its more limited nature. But with whole genome sequencing currently costing on average ?10 000 and an exome test between 10 and 20 times less we can see significant cost savings, and the less complex nature of the test means that diagnostic results can be available much more quickly. Genetic diagnosis is becoming more and more important in the clinic and we believe that, as it develops, the exome technique will be one of the first tests to be considered by a doctor where a genetic disease is suspected. "

So, I figured I'd take advantage and let it blow a few summertime thoughts about Chicago's sports teams down your way.

Cubs

• The Cubs' owners already have Mayor Rahm Emanuel miffed at them about family patriarch Joe Ricketts' proposed "Super PAC" attack ads aimed at President Obama, which threw a screwball at the team's hopes for public funding to renovate Wrigley Field.

But now, the Cubs have Arizona State University president Michael Crow rankled as well. Reportedly, the team approached ASU to partner on the construction of the Cubs' new $100 million spring training facility that's set to break ground in Mesa in July.

But in a recent email to Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, Crow wrote: "We have found ourselves dealing with a highly erratic Cubs organization and we have been all but told that they want us out of the deal." The Arizona Republic reports that the arrangement, which was to allow ASU to play games at the stadium in return for a financial commitment, was once considered done, but is now "50-50."

It appears that the field isn't the only place that the Cubs are having a difficult time "playing ball" this season.

White Sox

• By bouncing back on Wednesday to win the finale of their three-game series against the Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox perhaps avoided repeating city baseball history ? in reverse.

In 1999, the Cubs were just one game out of first place with a 32-24 record when the Sox visited Wrigley Field and promptly swept them. The Cubs never recovered, going 35-71 the rest of the way to finish a dreadful 67-95 and 30 games out of first ? despite Sammy Sosa's 63 home runs.

The slumping Sox were indeed knocked out of first by the Cubs this week, but to fall as far as their rivals did back in '99, they'd likely need to scale to the top of Willis Tower first.

Bears

• This week, while chatting on "SportsCenter" about the NFC North this coming season, ESPN NFL analyst Bill Polian ? the former Indianapolis Colts executive ? said that the Green Bay Packers are "a great team," the Detroit Lions are "very close to being a great team" and the Chicago Bears "can be a great team if everything falls into place."

Now, either my standards for "greatness" are considerably, well, greater than Polian's, or the NFC North battle will be truly epic this season. I'll settle for entertaining. And I'll project that the Bears' divisional chances are a bit greater than Detroit's, but a bit less than Green Bay's.

Bulls

• Derrick Rose on Tuesday took a trip down to Dixie to have renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews take a look-see at his surgically repaired knee inside his Alabama office.

Reports are that Rose's recovery is going well. And in a recent Q&A on the team's website, Bulls general manager Gar Forman wrote about his star guard, "We're optimistic that if he continues to make the kind of progress that he has that we will see Derrick back on the floor at some point next season."

My advice for the Bulls would be to not rush Rose back and remain extra cautious with him. Next season should be considered a "reloading" year for the Bulls, who ought to focus on finding Rose a championship-caliber running mate more than results on the court.

And that's not just whistling Dixie.

At least one tornado linked to the storm touched down in southwest Florida, but no injuries were reported.

Debby was about 220 miles (354 kilometers) south of the mouth of the Mississippi River, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph).

The center of Debby is expected to linger over the northern Gulf during the next few days with no landfall in the immediate forecast. Forecasters warned of up to six inches of rain along the coast, with isolated amounts of 10 inches.

It was the first time four tropical storms have been recorded before July 1 during the Atlantic hurricane season since record keeping began in 1851.

Debby forced the suspension of 8 percent of the region's oil and gas production.

The government reported that nine production platforms and one drilling rig were evacuated. The suspended crude production amounts to about 2 percent of U.S production and about 0.1 percent of global production. The reduced production is not expected to impact oil prices unless the storm strengthens and forces more production platforms to close.

A tropical storm warning was issued for part of the Louisiana coast. Officials there have been monitoring the weather closely for the last several days. Some low-lying areas close to the coast flood easily in rough weather.

"We've already seen higher tides than usual," said Angela Rains, manager of the Terrebonne Levee District.

Near the mouth of the Mississippi southeast of New Orleans, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said officials were making preparations to protect the main highway from tidal flooding.

A tornado touched down in Collier County in southwest Florida and forecasters warned other twisters were possible.

Several homes were damaged and tree limbs were down, The Naples Daily News reported.

"This is quite common with this type of storm," said senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart with the National Hurricane Center. "They tend to not be very large or long-lived, which can be difficult to detect on radar. So people need to keep an eye on the sky."

Out in the Gulf, Anadarko Petroleum removed all non-essential personnel and expects to close four facilities in the central and eastern Gulf by Saturday. Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell and Marathon Oil said non-essential personnel were being removed but production was not being affected. ExxonMobil reported that its operations were unaffected.
